Terrible!! See Shocking Photos From The Accident That Happens Along Ibadan Express Road, Passengers Burnt To Death

Read what our Reporters sent to us below:-
A terrible accident happened today (Sunday 30
October 2016) around 4:00pm involving a
fourteen seater bus and a car, the bus had a
burst tyre while on motion, and ran into the
car.
The two passengers in the car lost there life on
the spot, while five other people from the bus
was burnt beyond recognition. With the help of
some road safety officers, police officers and
some passers-by, we were able to carry those
alive to OAU teaching hospital and seven days
adventist both in ife, two others life’s were lost
when we got to hospitals, doctors and nurses
are attending to others.
If the emergency system in this country was
fast and reliable, we would have been able to
save more souls. It took us more than an hour
before we could get to the nearest hospital,
souls are perishing on our roads on daily basis
due to bad roads and poor health system, yet
one selfish politician will steal trillions of naira
meant for this purposes.
May the Lord have mercy on us all. I think
people should also be enlightened on the needs
to provide assistance to victims involved in
accident, I didn’t see the spirit of a good
Nigerian on the road today as people were not
ready to help us carry the injured victims,
either military men on uniform refused to
render help.
See photos from the Accident scene below:-

Please put these victims in your prayers.
May God in his Infinite mercy guide us and keep
us all away from any evils around. || By his
Grace, We won’t Jam anyone and no one will jam

Police Smash 50- Man Teenage Robbery Gang In Lagos

Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad , RRS, of
the Lagos State Police Command , have smashed a
teenage robbery gang , whose members masquerade
as load carriers in Oshodi area of Lagos , arresting
six of its suspected members .
During preliminary investigation, the gang was
discovered to have over 50 teenagers as members .
Its modus operandi included posing as load carriers
or bus conductors , only to flee with their victims
valuables , which were meant to be taken into
commercial buses or across the road .
Its victims as gathered, were mainly female . Luck
ran against one of them , Ganiyu Rahman , after he
allegedly snatched a mobile phone from a female
undergraduate of the University of Lagos.
His arrest , led to those of other suspected
members of the gang . During interrogation ,
Rahman, 15, blamed his action on his parents
separation , disclosing that he was forced to join
the gang because he had no place to sleep.
According to him, “ I have been sleeping under
Oshodi Bridge since 2013, after my parents
separated . I work as a conductor and when I do not
have any bus to work with , I will join my peers to
rob and snatch valuables in Oshodi .
“Three of us stole the Microsoft phone from a
lady’ s bag . We pretended to be helping her to get
a bus , but our target was her phones . I have been
committed to 13 month rehabilitation by the Lagos
State Taskforce , but my home is in Oshodi Under
Bridge.
“We are over 50 boys . We are always at Oshodi -
Oke, from morning till late night .
‘ How we operate ’
“Some of us genuinely help people to carry their
loads, while a lot of us are there to snatch
handbags, phones and other valuables from people.
At times , we pretend to be helping them but our
focus are their valuables .
“Most times , we work in groups . While the other is
helping out , another person would steal the victim ’ s
valuables either from the bag or pocket.
“There are some other members , who forcibly
dispossess people of their belongings . They operate
in the early morning and late at night , when their
victims are helpless . ”
One of his alleged partners in crime, Sadiq
Adebayo, 15 , admitted to have stolen an Iphone and
a Phantom Tecno phone from a car , in the company
of two other members of the gang whose name he
gave as Osas and Janbele.
He said : “ We sold the two phones along with seven
other phones to Tuwo in Idi - Oro , Mushin . I got
N 7 , 000 from the proceeds . ”
Four other suspects, Timilehin Oluwaseun , 14;
Ogundare Moyinoluwa , 18 ; Toheeb Tijani, 19 ; and
Adeleke Sodiq, 17 , were reportedly apprehended ,
while allegedly stealing phones and purses from
commuters in Oshodi .
Police’ s resolve
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer,
Superintendent Dolapo Badmus, who disclosed that
the suspects had been transferred to the Lagos
State Task Force, advised parents to always
monitor the activities of their wards .
She stated that the command would not leave any
stone unturned in its resolve to rid Lagos State of
criminal elements .

APC asks NJC to drop Justice Ndu, Wali from ethics committee

The All Progressives Congress,
APC, in Rivers has called on the
National Judicial Council, NJC, to
drop retired Justice Iche Ndu and
Okey Wali from its 10-person
Judicial Ethics Committee.
The APC Publicity Secretary,
Chris Finebone, made the call in
a statement in Port Harcourt on
Sunday.
Mr. Finebone said that the APC
noted with shock their recent
appointment as members of the
10-person Judicial Ethics
Committee with a mandate to
review the Code of Conduct for
Judicial Officers in the country.
Messrs. Ndu and Wali, he alleged,
were well-known Peoples
Democratic Party, PDP,
sympathisers, foot soldiers, close
associates and unarguable ardent
supporters of Governor Nyesom
Wike.
“The APC vehemently rejects
their inclusion in a critical
committee such as the Judicial
Ethics Committee of the NJC
charged with an all-important
task of reviewing the Code of
Conduct for judicial officers.
“Indeed, their inclusion
underscores the unwillingness
and unpreparedness of the NJC to
buy into the anti-corruption drive
of the President Muhammadu
Buhari’s administration.
“The APC views this action by the
NJC as the height of insensitivity
and brazen resistance to the
efforts by the government to
sanitise the Nigerian judiciary,”
he said.
Mr. Finebone said that the
Chairman of NJC and Chief
Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Mahmud
Mohammed, and the rest of the
council members could not feign
ignorance of the overt political
leanings of Messrs. Ndu and
Wali.
“We make bold to state that this obvious
display of indiscretion by the CJN and the NJC
smacks of inexplicable thoughtlessness,
befuddles the mind and sears through good
conscience,” he alleged.
He called on the NJC and Mr. Mohammed to
drop Messrs. Ndu and Wali from the NJC 10-
member Judicial Ethics Committee without
delay.
Mr. Finebone urged the NJC to do the needful
immediately or face a well-mobilised and
long-drawn protest by the APC which would
include occupying selected locations in Port
Harcourt and Abuja.
Retired Justice Ndu and Mr. Wali were former
Chief Judge of Rivers and President of the
Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, respectively.

INTERVIEW: Why we insist on meeting Buhari – World Record holder & Paralympics gold medallist

Over a month after returning
from the Paralympic Games in
Rio, the physically challenged
athletes that did the country
proud are yet to make the
‘Dream Trip’ to the Aso Rock
Presidential Villa to be officially
hosted by President Muhammad
Buhari.
Regardless of the tight schedule
of Mr. President, many feel
squeezing out little time for the
unsung heroes will be a step in
the right direction even if the
euphoria of a record-breaking
outing at the 2016 Games have
weaned. Nigeria won eight gold
medals at the event.
One of the athletes that braved
the odds in Rio to win gold in
astonishing fashion, Paul
Kehinde, tells PREMIUM TIMES
in this exclusive interview with
TUNDE ELUDINI why he is keen
to see the President. He also
shares his grass to grace story as
a physically challenged athlete.
Excerpts…
PT: Can we meet you?
Paul: My name is Paul Kehinde
(MON). I am a Power-lifter
PT: How and why did you opt to
go into Powerlifting?
Paul: While I was growing up in
the Ketu area of Lagos, I liked
lifting weight like the able-
bodied people; I even lift bigger
weights than them.

In one of those days somebody told me it was
something I can benefit from, so I tried to
follow him to the stadium to see everything
they were doing. I was inspired by what I
saw.
They handed me over to Coach Are who
trained me to become who I am today and I
am very happy because meeting him was very
good for my power lifting career.
I have been going to many trials, winning for
Nigeria at the All African Games, World
Championship, and Commonwealth winning
gold in my category.
I am happy that even at the Paralympics, I
emerged a gold medalist. I thank God for the
opportunity to represent and do my country
proud. I also thank my coach, my secretary.
PT: Will use say your journey to the top was
an easy one?
Paul: It was not easy training, I live at
Ikorodu and I have to wake up by 3 a.m. to
meet up with training at the National Stadium
by 6 a.m.
Discipline is important for success as my
coach usually says. With discipline and focus
one would eventually reach his goal.
I train very hard- morning and afternoon- it
was discipline and determination that made
me keep at it. That’s why it looked like it was
easy.
PT: With the kind of preparations you had,
did you have any fears before going to Rio?
Paul: It was mixed feelings for me in the run
up to the Paralympics. Though we had been
training hard prior to our camping ahead of
the Olympics, some of the opponents that we
were scheduled to meet up were ones we had
never met in prior competitions. This can
cause some uncertainty. But I tried to
encourage myself, saying I had done it before
in other competitions and I looked at it that it
was time to put all training to good use. So I
decided to get over my fear and do what I
knew how to do best.
PT: What is life for you outside your
Powerlifting?
Paul: Currently, the only thing I do is sports.
But it would very helpful if the government
can reward us and one can start a small
business and gain means of livelihood.
A lack of employment opportunities is what
causes people with disability to resort to
charity or begging but we would also like to
be self-sufficient.
Imagine someone who broke the world record
twice but doesn’t have money in his pocket or
is even unable to buy a car. Winning a medal
is for glory, not only for myself but also for
my country and it would be nice to get
rewarded in some tangible sort of way.
PT: Can you let us into your family
background?
Paul: I am from a polygamous family where I
have seven siblings but I am the only person
living with a disability.
PT: How do you feel that even though you
are the only disabled among your peers you
are better known across the world due to
exploits in sports?
Paul: I feel very great because God has
already written everything down; it is part of
my destiny.
My disability had made it that I would be
looked down upon especially in a large family
where no one else shares my challenge but
God works in mysterious ways and has made
my name well known all over the world
despite the challenges. I have faced
intimidation here and there but the will of
God has surely come to pass. I thank God
today that I am counted as one the best in my
chosen sport.
PT: Growing up, how was it?
Paul: It was challenging because a lot of times
they could not look beyond my physical
challenge. There were some things I wanted
to do, things that I felt I could do despite the
physical disability. So growing up it was a
normal thing to be left out by family, friends
and colleagues in school. It used to make me
angry because I felt discriminated (against),
but I thank God that all is now in the past.
Everyone wants to be associated with me
because of what has happened. I will be
forever grateful for my mother’s support
before she passed on. At first she wasn’t so
keen on me doing power lifting but when she
saw my perseverance, she decided to support
and sponsor me. Unfortunately, she is not
here to see my moment of glory but in spirit I
know she is with me because every time I get
on the podium to collect another medal I
remember her and all efforts over me.
PT: Are you married or have immediate
plans?
Paul: Right now, I have a fiancée who has
been very supportive. It is not always easy to
find a woman who stays with you despite all
odds. I will like to have something substantial
before I marry her. I do not want a situation
where people like her family members or
friends would tell her, didn’t we tell you not
to marry a disabled person.
PT: It’s over a month since you came from
Rio, have you been told when the President
will host you?
Paul: We have not been told when the
President would be receiving us and we are
praying hard over it. Like I said earlier it
would be nice if we are rewarded. Not only
would it help us tremendously, it would also
serve as motivation for us and others who
look up to us. After I won the Commonwealth
Games, it was dreams come true when I was
given the national award MON. This was my
first Paralympics and I wanted something
good to come out of it and I am still hopeful.

Nigerian launches crowdfunding campaign to help Reuben Abati

In apparent attempt to mock
Reuben Abati, a man, Ettu
Mohammed, on Sunday opened a
fundraising campaign on
Gofundme.com on his behalf.
The man asked Nigerians to
“please save Reuben Abati from
EFCC.”
He said the former presidential
spokesperson was influenced by
“Aso Rock evil spirits” to collect
N50 million from former National
Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki.
Mr. Abati, former spokesperson
to ex-president Goodluck
Jonathan, was arrested by EFCC
operatives on Monday over
allegations he illicitly received
N50 million from the former NSA.
Although Mr. Abati was offered
administrative bail that requires
presenting a senior federal civil
servant – preferably a director –
with landed properties in Abuja,
EFCC sources said he had been
unable to meet the bail
conditions.
EFCC has asked various persons
involved in illicit financial flow
with the former NSA to refund
what they collected. Sources at
the commission told PREMIUM
TIMES that Mr. Abati admitted in
his statement that he received
the money but said he spent in
on media relations and would not
return same.
“Reuben Abati the spokesman of
ex-president Goodluck Jonathan is
under lock and key for
voluntarily collecting the sum of
50m Ngn from Sambo Dasuki,”
Mr. Mohammed, a staunch
supporter of President
Muhammadu Buhari wrote on
Gofundme.com, an online
fundraising platform.
“We believe he must have been under the
influence of Aso Rock evil spirit,” he added,
asking for $108,000 in donations to Mr. Abati
who recently wrote an article narrating how
the Aso Rock was pervaded by evil spirits.
When operatives questioned him about how
he spent the funds, Mr. Abati reportedly said
he disbursed it to media practitioners in his
capacity as the spokesman for the Goodluck
Jonathan administration.
But he said he did not keep records of the
disbursement when queried for evidence.
“We are begging Nigerians to save Reuben
Abati from detention, Mr. Mohammed later
told PREMIUM TIMES on phone.
“Two weeks ago, he said there were evil
spirits in Aso Rock but he was running
around for Goodluck Jonathan to return so
that he could continue working on the same
place infested by evil spirits.”
But over 12 hours, after the campaign was
opened, nobody has donated.
“Nigerians are angry,” Mr. Mohammed, an
electrical engineer, said, explaining reason
why no one had donated.
He asked Mr. Buhari to “simultaneously build
infrastructure and institutions for operations
and maintenance”.

Chemical dangers in the battle for Mosul

As Iraqi forces close in on Mosul,
the possibility of chemical weapons
use looms large.

Iraqi forces wear gas masks for protection, as
smoke billows in the background from al-
Mishraq chemical plant [AFP]
Hamish de Bretton-Gordon
Hamish de Bretton-Gordon is a
chemical weapons adviser to NGOs
working in Syria and Iraq.
It feels like this is the beginning of the end of
the campaign to liberate Mosul from the
Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, and some
seem to be predicting that ISIL fighters will
drift away at some stage to fight another day
in Syria.
Those more than 100 suicide bombers seen in
the first week of the assault and those who set
light to al-Mishraq chemical plant would
suggest this is not the case and that ISIL (also
known as ISIS) will throw the kitchen sink at
the coalition to stave off losing Mosul.
With ISIL's Iraq strongholds gone, so is most
of the caliphate, no doubt with a final battle
in Raqqa - but the war hinges on Mosul.

Chemical weapons expert discusses ISIL 'chlorine
attack'
In this forthcoming apocalypse ISIL will fight
with every means available, and this will
include the use of their extensive chemical
weapons capability.
Built up over the past two years, ISIL has been
making mustard agent and fashioning toxic
industrial chemicals into improvised weapons,
which it has been testing by attacking the
Peshmerga of Iraqi Kurdistan.
More than 20 times in the past 12 months ISIL
has fired mortars and rockets at Peshmerga
troops in the Makhmour area containing the
"blister agent" mustard gas and chlorine, a
choking gas. Chlorine and mustard gas were
first developed in World War I as chemical
weapons and both can be fatal if gas masks
are not used.
These chemicals have killed few but injured
many, and as General Sirwan Barzani,
commander of the Peshmerga Black Tigers of
Sector 6, told me in August near Gwer: "I
know chemicals are not as dangerous as
bombs and bullets, but my men have few gas
masks and they fear chemicals."
A toxic legacy
The Kurds know all about chemical weapons;
it was Saddam Hussein who tried to
exterminate them in the 1980s in the Anfal
campaign , killing up to 100,000; and most
notably 5,000 in a single day at Halabja on
March 16, 1988, using the deadly nerve agent
sarin.
Bashar al-Assad used the same chemical
weapon in Ghouta on August 21, 2013 to
horrific effect. It is now Saddam's Baathist
scientists who are developing ISIL's chemical
capability.
On both occasions the death toll was very
high because it was innocent civilians who
were attacked who had no way or knowledge
to save themselves.
To underestimate ISIL's
capacity for terror is an
error, and to underestimate
its ability to conduct
chemical warfare would be
very unwise.
The Ghouta attack in Syria helped Assad to
stay in power for three years, and prevented
Damascus from falling.
His forces have also prevented ISIL from
taking the strategic military base at Deir Az-
Zor for the past two years with the use of
chlorine barrel bombs. This, I believe, has had
a profound effect on ISIL when planning their
defence of Mosul.
The first element of the defence of Mosul was
seen last week when ISIL set fire to al-
Mishraq chemical plant 30km south of Mosul.
This is putting huge amounts of deadly
hydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide into
the atmosphere, which is mixing with
poisonous fumes from oil fires to produce a
deadly cocktail.
OPINION: Remembering Halabja chemical attack
To date, several are reported dead and 1,000
injured. The cloud is currently sitting over the
military base Qayyarah, forcing the United
States military personnel into gas masks and
others indoors.
From a military perspective this is a good
move by ISIL, as it cuts through the advancing
Iraqi army, not all of whom have gas masks,
as they march towards Mosul.
If this toxic cloud were to move eastwards to
more populated areas this could be of grave
concern. Saddam Hussein set fire to Mishraq
in 2003, as the US coalition advanced into
Iraq. It burned for two months, caused
thousands of casualties, and allegedly burned
a hole in the ozone layer.
The capacity for terror
To underestimate ISIL's capacity for terror is
an error, and to underestimate its ability to
conduct chemical warfare would be very
unwise.
ISIL scientists have developed an extensive if
crude chemical arsenal including mustard
agent, chlorine and other toxic industrial
chemicals.
The battle for Mosul - The beginning of
the end
Chemical weapons are extremely effective for
defending built-up areas and cities, as they
put attackers into gas masks which make
fighting "hand-to-hand" exceedingly difficult.
And if they don't have masks, as some
Peshmerga and Iraqi army don't, chemical
weapons could make them think twice about
entering the city.
It is the psychological effect of these
abhorrent weapons which is of most use to
the defender; and it is this fear which must
be overcome by the attacker.
This could be achieved by good training and
leadership, which the coalition must continue
to provide to Baghdad and Erbil.
Even if this fear is overcome and Mosul is
conquered militarily, the final battle will not
be won unless we invest into a vast
humanitarian programme.
The millions of souls left who have had to
endure two years of ISIL brutality will not
thank us if we cannot feed and clothe them,
give them water and electricity, and prevent a
potential environmental disaster left behind
as ISIL's toxic legacy.
Executing these vital tasks will involve the
support of NGOs and those right behind the
frontlines. There will undoubtedly be all types
of toxic nasties left behind by ISIL, and we
must ensure that these NGOs have the
wherewithal to deal with them.

Dozens of civilians dead in rebel assault on Aleppo

Rebel fighters from the Jaish al-Fatah (or
Army of Conquest) brigades manoeuver a
T-55 tank as they take part in a major assault
on Syrian government forces West of Aleppo
city on October 28, 2016. Syrian opposition
fighters launched a major assault on
government forces to break a months-long
siege of rebel-held neighbourhoods of the
battered city of Aleppo. Rebel groups
including the powerful Ahrar al-Sham faction
and former Al-Qaeda affiliate Fateh al-Sham
Front fired waves of rockets into government-
held western Aleppo, killing at least 15
civilians, a monitor said. The rebels also
targeted government positions east of Aleppo
city and in the coastal province of Latakia.
Omar haj kadour / AFP
Syria’s regime and rebels were locked in
fierce fighting Sunday on Aleppo’s western
edges, where 38 civilians have been killed
in a two-day opposition offensive to break
the government siege.
Rebels and allied jihadists launched a major
offensive on Friday to break through
government lines and reach the 250,000
people living in the city’s east.
Since then, they have unleashed a salvo of
rockets, artillery shells, and car bombs
around the western government-controlled
districts.
Syria’s second city, Aleppo has been
devastated by some of the heaviest fighting
of the country’s five-year civil war, which
has killed more than 300,000 people.
Much of the once-bustling economic hub
has been reduced to rubble by air and
artillery bombardment, including barrel
bombs — crude unguided explosive devices
that cause indiscriminate damage.
“Rebel fighters have launched hundreds of
rockets and shells onto the western districts
from positions inside the city and on its
western edges,” said Rami Abdel Rahman,
head of the Syrian Observatory for Human
Rights.
Two days of such heavy rebel bombardment
have killed 38 civilians, including 14
children, and wounded another 250.
Fighting has also killed 30 regime and
allied fighters, as well as 50 Syrian rebels,
according to the Observatory.
The monitor did not have an immediate
death toll for foreign anti-regime fighters,
many of whom have joined jihadist
factions.
About 1,500 rebels have massed on a 15-
kilometre front along the western edges of
Aleppo since Friday, scoring quick gains in
the Dahiyet al-Assad district but struggling
to push east since then.
“The advance will be from Dahiyet al-Assad
towards Hamdaniyeh,” said Yasser al-
Youssef of the Noureddin al-Zinki rebel
faction.
Hamdaniyeh is a regime-held district
directly adjacent to opposition-controlled
eastern neighbourhoods.
Missiles, car bombs
Fighting lasted all night and into Sunday,
with air strikes and artillery fire along the
western battlefronts heard even in the
eastern districts, an AFP correspondent
there said.
Plumes of smoke could be seen snaking up
from the city’s skyline.
A pro-regime military source told AFP that
the rebel assault was “massive and
coordinated” but insisted it was unable to
break into any neighbourhoods besides
Dahiyet al-Assad.
“They’re using Grad missiles and car bombs
and are supported by foreign fighters in
their ranks,” he said.
Those waging the assault include Aleppo
rebels and reinforcements from Idlib
province to the west, among them the
jihadist Fateh al-Sham Front, which
changed its name from Al-Nusra Front after
breaking ties with Al-Qaeda.
Aleppo’s front line runs through the heart
of the city, dividing rebels in the east from
government troops in the west.
In late September, government troops
launched their own assault to recapture all
of the eastern rebel-controlled territory.
It was backed by fierce air strikes from
Russia, which launched its own air war in
2015 to back President Bashar al-Assad’s
forces.
That onslaught spurred massive
international criticism of both Moscow and
Damascus.
Last week, Russia implemented a three-day
“humanitarian pause” intended to allow
civilians and surrendering rebels to leave
Aleppo’s east, but few did so.
Moscow says it will continue a halt on air
strikes over Aleppo, in place since October
18.
The Russian military said Friday it had
asked President Vladimir Putin for
authorisation to resume the raids.
But Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said
Putin “considers it inappropriate at the
current moment”, adding that the president
thought it necessary to “continue the
humanitarian pause” in Aleppo.

Iraqi militiamen battle IS southwest of Mosul

Iraqi army soldiers patrol outside a refugee
camp in Qayyarah, south of Mosul, on
October 29, 2016. Iraqi paramilitary forces
launched an operation to cut the Islamic
State group’s supply lines between its Mosul
bastion and neighbouring Syria, opening a
new front in the nearly two-week-old
offensive.
BULENT KILIC / AFP
Iraqi paramilitary forces battled the Islamic
State group south-west of Mosul on Sunday,
the second day of an operation to cut
jihadist supply lines between the city and
neighbouring Syria.
Tens of thousands of Iraqi troops and
Kurdish peshmerga fighters have been
advancing on Mosul from the north, east
and south after the launch on October 17 of
a vast offensive to retake IS’s last
stronghold in the country.
After standing largely on the sidelines in
the first days of the assault, forces from the
Hashed al-Shaabi — a paramilitary umbrella
organisation dominated by Iran-backed
Shiite militias — began a push on Saturday
towards the west of Mosul.
The ultimate aim is the recapture of Tal
Afar, a town west of the city, and the
cutting of jihadist supply lines between
Mosul and Syria, but the Hashed still has
significant ground to cover.
In a series of statements on Sunday, the
Hashed’s media office said it had retaken
two villages, cleared another area and
entered several more.
Al-Imraini, one of the two villages the
Hashed said it recaptured, is 45 kilometres
(27 miles) from Tal Afar, according to the
media office.
The drive toward Tal Afar could bring the
fighting perilously close to the ancient city
of Hatra, a UNESCO world heritage site, and
the ruins of Nimrud — two archeological
sites that have previously been vandalised
by IS.
The involvement of Shiite militias in the
Mosul operation has been a source of
contention, though the Hashed’s top
commanders insist they do not plan to
enter the largely Sunni city.
Concerns over militias
Iraqi Kurds and Sunni Arab politicians have
opposed their involvement, as has Turkey
which has a military presence east of Mosul
despite repeated demands by Baghdad for
the forces to be withdrawn.
Relations between the Hashed and the US-
led coalition fighting IS are also tense, but
the paramilitaries enjoy widespread support
among members of Iraq’s Shiite majority.
The Hashed has been a key force in Iraq’s
campaign to retake areas seized by IS in
mid-2014, when the jihadists took control of
large parts of Syria and Iraq and declared a
cross-border “caliphate”.
But the paramilitaries have been repeatedly
accused of human rights violations during
the course of the war against IS, including
summary killings, kidnappings and
destruction of property.
Tal Afar was a Shiite-majority town of
mostly ethnic Turkmens before the Sunni
extremists of IS overran it in 2014, and its
recapture is a main goal of Shiite militia
forces.
The Sunday fighting came a day after Iraq
announced the recapture of Al-Shura, an
area south of Mosul with a long history as a
militant bastion that has been the target of
fighting for more than a week.
Iraq’s Joint Operations Command
announced “the complete liberation of Al-
Shura,” saying that security forces
advancing from four different sides had
linked up in the area, which is north of
Qayyarah base, the main hub for the
southern front.
Over 17,600 displaced
The US-led coalition — which has been
assisting federal forces and Kurdish
peshmerga with air strikes, training and
advisers for two years — said Friday that
Iraqi forces were observing a pause in the
two-week-old offensive.
In Bartalla, a Christian town just east of
Mosul, army and counter-terrorism forces
were consolidating their positions,
unloading cases of weapons from trucks
and organising their ammunition stocks.
More than 17,600 people have fled their
homes toward government-held areas since
the Mosul operation began, the
International Organization for Migration
said on Sunday.
Numbers are expected to soar as Iraqi
forces close in on the city, which is home
to more than a million people.
The UN says there have been credible
reports of IS carrying out mass executions
in the city and seizing tens of thousands of
people for use as human shields.
IS’s “depraved, cowardly strategy is to
attempt to use the presence of civilians to
render certain points, areas or military
forces immune from military operations”,
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights
Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein said in a statement.
The jihadists are “effectively using tens of
thousands of women, men and children as
human shields,” he said.
The UN cited reports indicating IS has
forcibly taken civilians into Mosul, killing
those who resist or who were previously
members of Iraqi security forces.
It said more than 250 people were executed
in just two days earlier this week.

Boko Haram recruiting youth to supply fuel in Borno – NSCDC

The Borno command of the Nigeria Security and
Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on Sunday raised
alarm that youths in Maiduguri are now being
recruited by Boko Haram to supply fuel in
Gamboru Ngala area of the state.
The Commandant of the NSCDC, Mr Ibrahim
Abdullahi made the revelation in an interview with
the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri.
Abdullahi said the command had intercepted a
reasonable quantity of fuel packaged in a carton
of groundnut oil, bound for Gamboru Ngala local
government area in the state.
He said since Boko Haram are running out of food
and other supplies, they have employed all sorts of
means to replenish stock.
“The command had so far arrested a suspect, who
confessed that he did not know the owner of the
consignment that he was asked to deliver to the
insurgents trapped in Gamboru Ngala.
“He later confessed that each of the five litres of
fuel is sold at N15,000 to the insurgents.
“You will recall we raised the alarm that some
agents of Boko Haram were transporting stolen
cows from Mafa, Kalabalge and Bomboshe axis in
the state to cattle market in Maiduguri.
“The Boko Haram usually send the cows to their
agents in the city who will then sell them and
repatriate either cash or fuel to the terrorists.
“We are therefore warning the people especially
drivers not to accept or convey any form of
message that looks suspicious to any one, especially
along the Gamboru axis.
“We are also warning the drivers, park owners and
union groups to always check their passengers and
their luggages to avoid transporting bad elements
that would cause havoc in the society.
According to him, the command is working with
other relevant security agencies to bring all the
collaborators of terrorists to book.

cost continued to impact negatively on the oil
industry.

Beware!! See The Reason Why You Should Probably Stop Taking Paracetamol (See Here)

Paracetamol is a very popular go-to painkiller in
this part of the world but is it always the right
decision to pop the pills whenever you wish.
New research shows that the drug, which has
been around for over 50 years, might not be
your best bet every time. In fact, it was
suggested that the drug actually does nothing
for most pains.
According to the conclusion from the research,
acute pains that are sudden in onset (like
headaches or pain after an operation, for
instance), would go away after a while,
regardless of how many paracetamol you pop.
Sure, paracetamol can provide reveal but it will
not work for everybody. In fact, this only works
for a small number of people.
When it comes to headaches, only one in ten
people benefit from the drug and for
postoperative pain, one in four.
If paracetamol works for you, fantastic! But be
aware that it does not work for everyone and
might even simply be a waste of money for most
when there is an alternative, which is, waiting
out the pain.

signing back out-of-favour Manchester United and
England captain, Wayne Rooney.
Everton manager, Ronald Koeman described the
striker as a “great player” and would welcome the
chance to bring him back to Goodison Park, his
boyhood club.
Rooney is struggling at Manchester United with
reports suggesting he has been told by manager,
Jose Mourinho that he can leave Old Trafford.
Although the England captain has been linked with
a move to MLS side, Los Angeles Galaxy. Koeman
would grab the opportunity to bring him back to
Everton.
Speaking to the press ahead of Sunday’s game
against West Ham United, the Dutchman said,
“First of all, he’s a great player – he’s still not
finished his career.
“I don’t know what his situation is, I need to
respect his situation. That’s not my problem.
“Even if one time there is a possibility that
Rooney is an option for Everton, I’d say ‘yes,
please’.”
On Rooney’s struggles under Mourinho at United,
Koeman added, “That’s football. He is enough of
an experienced player and person that he knows
what can happen.
“Everyone gets periods of criticism. It’s part of
the business and you need to stay calm and that’s
the best thing you can do.”
Rooney began his football career at Everton and
scored a wonder goal against Arsenal at age 16.
He signed for the Old Trafford outfit in August

Pope, Lutheran leaders to commemorate 500 years since Reformation

Pope Francis and Lutheran
church leaders would travel to
southern Sweden on Monday for
the commemoration of a five-
centuries-old event that has been
one of the most divisive in
western Christianity’s Protestant
Reformation.
A report on Friday in Vatican City
(Holy Sea) said pope would be
joined by Bishop Munib Younan,
Head of the Lutheran World
Federation (LWF), and Reverend
Martin Junge, the LWF General
Secretary, at an ecumenical
prayer service in Lund Cathedral.
It said the meeting would mark
another step forward in efforts to
overcome their historic divisions
and commemorate one of the
most divisive events in the
history of Christianity on
Monday.
“The upcoming anniversary year
gives them a chance to signal
more unity between Catholics
and Protestants,” the report
stated.
This year’s Reformation Day
commemorates 500 years since
Martin Luther’s wrote his
controversial 95 Theses, outlining
what he saw as widespread abuse
and corruption within the
Renaissance Catholic Church in
1517.
Catholic and Lutheran Churches
would use the day to launch a
year-long commemoration of the
historic anniversary.
Vatican recalled that Luther
criticised the sale of indulgences,
granting a remission of temporal
punishment due to sin to raise
money for the building of St
Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
“He also argued that the faithful
should be allowed to have a more
personal relationship with God
with less interference from the
clergy.
“His teachings triggered one of the most
significant schisms in Christianity, leading
Protestants to break away from the Catholic
Church,’’ it said.
Junge said the LWF groups 145 churches in
the Lutheran tradition, representing over 74
million Christians in 98 countries.
He said the commemoration would also mark
50 years of official ecumenical dialogue
through which Catholics and Lutherans have
sought to bridge the divide.
“It offers them an opportunity to reflect on
their divisions that resulted in conflict and
the 30 years’ War in Europe in the 17th
century.
“The dialogues have helped create trust and
contributed to removing “some of the
obstacles of doctrinal differences among us.
“The time is mature, is ripe, to move from
conflict to communion,” he said.
Cardinal Kurt Koch, who Heads the Pontifical
Council for Promoting Christian Unity, said
the commemoration was a sign of hope but
was repentance for the religious strife that
once rocked Europe.
He said after Monday’s prayer service, the
church leaders would attend a service focused
on youth and refugees in the nearby city of
Malmo, along with leaders from the Catholic
Diocese of Stockholm and the Lutheran
Church of Sweden, including Archbishop
Antje Jackelen.
Koch said proceeds from ticket sales in Malmo
were to be used for LWF’s work with Syrian
refugees in Jordan and the Catholic relief
agency Caritas’ support for children in the
Syrian city of Aleppo.
The LWF was founded in Lund in 1947, and
the city’s cathedral consecrated in 1145, has
been used by both Catholics and Lutherans.
Pope John Paul II was the first pope to visit
predominantly Lutheran Sweden in 1989.

'My husband insists on marrying my housemaid'

What would you do if your husband insists on
getting married to your housemaid? That is the
situation Monica has found herself in.

"Dear splensizy,
My name is Monica, a 36-year-old banker. I
have been married to John for 15 years now
and we have three children but my marriais heading for the rocks.
The reason for this is my husband's insistence on
getting married to my housemaid » and he has
even told me that I can leave his house if I don't
accept her as the second wife.
The girl, Emem , came to stay with us about six
years ago when I had my second child and I
needed someone to take care of the kids because
of additional responsibilities at work.
She was just 15-years-old then but very hard
working, respectful and innocent looking. Within a
short while, Emem became a star in the home,
practically taking over the running of the house.
She cooked for the household, washed, cleaned
the house including our bedroom and took the kids
as her younger ones. My husband too was
impressed with her and made sure she enrolled in
an extra-mural class and sat for her WAEC.
After she passed her exams, we enrolled her in a
part-time program at a state polytechnic while
she also learns fashion designing. I thought Joh
was doing these so that she could stand on her own
when she eventually leaves us.
Little did I know he was propping her to be his
wife in the future. The scale finally fell off my
eyes when I noticed that Emem was becoming dull,
fat and lazy.
She was also sleeping most of the times and would
take ages to complete the simplest of tasks. I
asked her what was wrong with her but she said
she there was nothing wrong with her.
But I got worried one day when I caught her
vomiting in the bathroom and I practically forced
her to the hospital for a test.
My worst fears were confirmed when the test
showed she was four months pregnant. When I got
home, I asked her who was responsible for the
pregnancy but Emem kept mum and all my pleas,
cajoling and threats would not move her.
When John came back, I reported to him but he
shocked me when he said she would mention the
person responsible when the time is right.
And the right time came the very next day when
John invited Emem's aunt, the woman who brought
her to me and in her presence, announced that he
was responsible for Emem's pregnancy and that he
was going to make her his second wife.
I was aghast and wanted to attack him but he just
brushed me aside and went ahead to say that
since I had abandoned my responsibilities as a wife
and mother to Emem, he has found her worthy of
being his wife.
I am now at cross roads and I don't know what to
do. I would never live in the same house with my
maid as my co-wife.
Monica."

Group warns APC over suspension of Timi Frank

The National Committee of Yoruba Youths (NCYY)
has stated that the All Progressives Congress APC
will head for the rocks should its Deputy National
Publicity Secretary of (APC) Comrade Timi Frank
be suspended.
In a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja,
President of the group, Oladimeji Olayemi said the
party should rather work towards solving all its
internal disputes in order to promptly deliver on
her mandate to Nigerians.
The national leadership of the APC had on
Wednesday inaugurated a disciplinary committee
to investigate a petition which had accused Timi
Frank of granting press interviews, where he
claimed the party might not last beyond next
year.

“We, by this statement call on Chief Oyegun and
this cabal to immediately put an end to the
continuous blackmails, harassment and intimidation
of Comrade Timi Frank.
“We wish to inform Nigerians, APC party faithful
across the nation and particularly all peace and
fact-seeking ones that there is no established
legal or political precedent for the charade that
Chief Oyegun and this cabal are currently planning
to embark upon by stampeding an elected party
official from his duty post through illegality and
incitement”, the group stated.

Why Buhari must increase minimum wage now – NLC

President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC,
Mr. Ayuba Wabba, yesterday, urged President
Muhammadu Buhari to increase workers’ current
minimum wage without further delay.
He said the demand by the organized labour was in
view of the economic recession, noting that N18,
000 was not an amount that any worker can
survive on.
Wabba said increment was the strategy the United
States used to address recession.
He argued that the economy cannot return to its
former state unless the citizens have purchasing
power.
“The state of the country’s economy requires that
we increase minimum wage. We need to empower
the people to buy and sell. If the economy is at
standstill and people cannot buy, the economy will
not grow.
“It is the workers’ money that keeps the economy
growing. It is not the fund disbursed for big
contracts that are kept in different accounts
that keeps the country economy growing.
“That was the logic that helped the United States
to revive their economy,” he added.
Meanwhile, President Buhari has urged Nigerians
to always speak positively about the country in
spite of the current economic recession.
Buhari made the call at the 7th National Prayer
Breakfast organised by the National Assembly on
Thursday in Abuja.
Represented at the occasion by the Secretary to
Government of the Federation, Mr Babachir Lawal,
Buhari assured Nigerians that the recession would
end very soon as the government was doing all
within its power to restore the economy of the
country.
“As Christians and political leaders, we must strive
to be the light of the world by speaking positively
concerning the state of the nation.
“These hard times we are in, require leaders who
are aware of the situation to stand in the gap to
see how to turn the situation around.
“I have total faith that Nigeria will emerge from
this crisis strong, united and prosperous, this will
come to fruition in the lifetime of this
government.
“Also as Christians and leaders we should all thank
God for the opportunity to be key player in this
time of economic meltdown,” Lawal admonished.

Attempted murder of Enugu ex-commissioner – Police arrests suspects

The Special Anti-Robbrey Squad, SARS, yesterday, arrested the alleged

The arrest came following pressure by groups, including the Christian Association
of Nigeria, CAN, and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, Enugu-East
Local Government Area Chapter.
A statement jointly signed by CAN Chairman, Rev. Henry Omenkenkwu, and PFN
Chairman, Apostle Joshua Nnamani, condemned “the nonchalant attitude of the
police, both at the Nike Division and the SARS”.
“We are always thanking God that the police is now doing a good work but they
failed in this matter. Therefore we ask,is it because the person attacked is a
pastor?
“Or did anybody ask the police not to respond to the cry of these innocent people.
We are confused and may be forced to approach a higher command to tell us what
we want to hear.
“This is a barbaric, inhuman and wicked handwork of evil men. It has to stop so that
peace will be restored in Nike community.
“We also call on the noble sons and daughters of Nike community to rise and
condemn this dastardly act”, the groups had stated.

As part of its social corporate
responsibility to the society, the
Rotary Club of Oyo under the
presidency of Olajide
Olanipekun, has immunised
over one thousand children
against the Polio virus with
anti-polio vaccines
administered to them in many
communities in the ancient
town.
The programme, which was facilitated to
commemorate the 2016 World Polio
anniversary, was kick-started with
sensitization rally and and later, house- to-
house vaccination of children that were yet
to be immunised against the disease.
The programme which took off from Durbar
Health Centre, moved to Araromi Health
Centre, Owode, Akeetan Baale, Idi-Ope,
Alalubosa, Asogo, Akesan, and ended up at
the Afin Maternity Centre adjoining the
Alaafin’s palace.
Though some of the parents exhibited
ignorance of the benefits of the
immunisation, they later appreciated the
organisers after the awareness exercise and
the knowledge of advantages inherent in the
medical facility.
Earlier, a woman had said that she was not
willing to allow her children to be vaccinated
because “our family elders told us that if our
children are vaccinated, it could lead to big
sores on their bodies that could not be cured,
and that it can lead to premature deaths. We
were also told that if any syrup is dropped
into the children’s mouth, the bitter taste of
the syrup will kill our children”.

We must instill culture of transparency, efficiency in oil, gas industry – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday in
Abuja stressed the need for a new culture of
transparency and efficiency in the nation’s oil
and gas industry to improve oil and gas
production in the country.
The President stated this at the public
presentation of the Ministry of Petroleum
Resources’ 7 BIG WINS, a short and medium
term priorities to grow Nigeria’s oil and gas
industry between 2015 and 2019.
He stated that an efficient oil and gas
industry would ensure that agriculture, solid
minerals and other critical sectors of the
economy were supported to grow and
contribute more to the nation’s economy.
He added that the nation needed a virile and
efficient oil and gas industry to take care of
its foreign exchange requirements and also
help to explore the frontier basins, improve
local refining capacity and build sustainable
partnerships with the oil producing
communities.
“There is also a dire need to instill a new
culture of transparency and efficiency in the
industry, streamline operations along best
practices by championing and implementing
strategic reforms at every layer of the
industry.
“If we are able to plug the leakages, and
tighten loose systems that characterised this
industry in the days of high oil prices, we are
convinced that we can do even more with the
little that we are getting at the moment than
we did even in the time of plenty.
The President said that the petroleum
industry remained critical to the Nigerian
economy of today and the future, in spite of
the current challenges.
“The golden era of high oil prices may not be
here now, but oil and gas resources still
remain the most immediate and practical keys
out of our present economic crisis.’’
He said the oil and gas remained a critical
enabler for the successful implementation of
the nation’s budget as well as the source of
funds for laying a strong foundation for a
new and more diversified economy.
According to him, this is a national imperative
and a core thrust of his administration’s
economic policy.
The president reiterated his administration’s
determination to resolve the socio-economic
and security challenges in the Niger Delta
region.
He, therefore, reassured that government’s
resolve and capacity to work with all
stakeholders to restore normalcy would
guarantee success in the Niger Delta region.
“As you are aware, recent developments in
the Niger Delta have temporarily limited our
oil and gas production and supplies.
The president congratulated the Minister of
State for Petroleum Resources and his staff
for their foresight and vision to transform
the oil and gas industry.
According to the president, the oil and gas
road map reflects the vision and aspiration of
his administration for the oil and gas sector.
He urged all stakeholders in the sector to
deliver on the expectations contained in the
Petroleum Industry Roadmap.
The President, therefore, appealed for the
support and cooperation of the media, local
and foreign investors and other critical
stakeholders in the oil and gas industry “as we
seek to consolidate CHANGE in this very
important sector of our national economy’’.
The minister explained that the 7 Big Wins to
grow the Nigerian oil and gas industry was
aimed at developing a stable and enabling oil
and gas landscape with improved
transparency, efficiency and stable
investment climate.
He expressed the hope that the ongoing
reform in the sector would provide huge
investment opportunities in infrastructure
development, oil and gas facilities, operations
and maintenance across the value chain.
“We can decide today to face the current
challenges and build our economy using our
bountiful gas resources.
“In just a few years, we can see Nigeria if we
work hard to be the latest exporter of
petroleum products rather than importers,
something that will act very dramatic in terms
of foreign earnings, reduce the pressure on
