6 DROWN IN BENUE AS BOAT CAPSIZES

6 DROWN IN BENUE AS BOAT CAPSIZES
No fewer than six persons drowned in River Benue following a boat mishap in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State last Thursday.
The unfortunate incident occurred when an overloaded boat crossing River Benue with mourners capsized.
The boat was reportedly ferrying more than 18 persons without any life jacket.
Our correspondent gathered that it is common for passengers in the area to board ferry without wearing life jacket.
Two bodies were said to have been recovered late on Thursday while three bodies were recovered early Friday morning.
Three of the deceased were said to be missing as at the time of filing the report.
The sole administrator of Guma Local Government Anthony Shawon said the accident occurred because the boat was overloaded.
Our correspondent learnt that most of the passengers, including the canoe paddler were drunk.
However shortly after the incident, youths in Gbajimba, headquarters of Guma local government, the country home of Governor Samuel Ortom took to the streets and protested.
They made bon fire on the streets and prevented movement of people within the town for several hours
Benue state police command spokesman, ASP Moses Yamu, confirmed the accident and mob action.
He however said normalcy has returned to the area.
