Lawmaker, Hon. Mike Adeniyi Omogbehin, has explained that it was high time Nigerian laws be reviewed.
In an exclusive interview in Abuja, member representing Okitipupa/Irele federal constituency of Ondo State noted that the sack of Jim Obazee, former Executive Secretary of Financial Regulatory Council (FRC) for directing General Overseers of Churches and non-governmental organisations to step down after 20 years, was unfortunate, saying government made a scapegoat out of him.
He reasoned that the former Executive Secretary was empowered by the law to issue the directive, stressing that if he did that within the precincts of his responsibilities that led to the resignation of Pastor Adeboye as G. O. of RCCG, Nigerian government ought to have been cautious on the issue.
“The sack of Jim Obazee seems to me that government made a scapegoat out the gentleman, whom I have never met before in my life,” he said.
“It is high time we became cautious on issues of this nature as such removal could serve as a wet blanket for being an administrator in the future”, he added.
Omogbehin further explained that government’s action was precipitated on reasons that it should not be seen to be against the church and Nigeria Christians
He, however, disagreed with Ekiti State governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose who believed the sack of FRC Executive Secretary was to pacify Christians ahead of 2019 elections which President Buhari likely to seek re-election.
“I am a member of the PDP and my leader, Ekiti State governor is a senior member of the party, but I want to disagree with him for the first time, because the controversial code was put in place during PDP’s administration,” he maintained.
He said Obazee was implementing those codes which unfortunately generated public outcry that got him into trouble, stressing, he would have taken into consideration the administrative elements of those codes by seeking National Assembly legislations.
