The International Criminal Court said it
had yet to begin investigations on a former Nigeria’s First Lady,
Patience Jonathan, for allegedly inciting people to violence.
Shortly before the general elections in
2015, the All Progressives Congress had sent a petition against Jonathan
to the ICC headquarters, accusing her of making inciting comments.
Responding to SUNDAY PUNCH’s inquiry on the matter, the ICC stated that though no investigation had been opened in Nigeria, it was considering the petition.
The ICC said, “To clarify, no
investigations have been opened in Nigeria yet. The office is very much
committed to this file, which is still at a preliminary examination
stage.
“The purpose of the preliminary
examination is to determine whether legal criteria for opening
investigations are met in Nigeria.”
