NL Review- splensizites, What Happened To Olamide And Phyno At The MAMAS? Why Did They Fail To Win Any Award? (Let’s Discuss)

 olamide
The 2016 MTV Africa Music Awards has come and gone with gusto.
The major highlight of a truly exhilarating event in Johannesburg South Africa, from a Nigerian perspective, was Wizkid’s dominance.
The artist raked 3 strong awards, most notably, the prestigious Artist of the Year honor.

However, despite nominations, Nigeria’s Olamide and Phyno failed to pick up an award in the Hip-Hop category.
The snub was met with disbelief among their fans in Nigeria, considering the duo are the giants of Hip-Hop music in Nigeria, but Naijaloaded.com.ng has observed the brush off with more scrutiny, and we are afraid MTV Africa might actually have a point or two to ignore them.
First, here are songs from the duo so far in 2016.
SONGS RELEASED

After dropping the “Eyan Mayweather” album in 2015, Olamide has released 8 personal singles this year alone:
Who You Epp, Sere Ft Lil Kesh, I Love Lagos, Abule sowo, Konkobility, Lies People Tell ft Maupheen Dalis, Owo Blow, Konkobility, Orobo.

Phyno-

Connect’, ‘Fada Fada’ ‘E Sure For Me’, ‘Pino Pino’.
STYLE
Olamide and Phyno’s style of music to business plan are mostly for a specific target of Nigerians from the West and East respectively.
Olamide, 27, has a nack of rapping in Yoruba, while Phyno, 30, on the other hand does his thing in Igbo, sandwiched with occasional Pidgin English– For people outside Nigeria, it is utter gibberish.
And it was no surprise the major domination of the Hip-Hop category in the MTV MAMA awards 2016 was shared between South African acts in Cassper Nyovest, AKA, Nasty C, and Emtee.
The notable connection between these guys is they all rap and sing in English, which is accepted and easily digested in every part of Africa and outside Africa.
STRATEGY
For Olamide and Phyno though, they do not have international ambitions in their strategy and not like it is really important.
They are more than contented with local dominance and you can observe from their respective release in 2016 that nothing will change anytime soon.
When the former was asked recently if he is chasing an international collaboration, he said:
“I will never pay for an international collaboration, Fela never did any international collaboration neither did he lobby or pay for any international collaboration, and his music went as far as all over the world.
“He was relevant while alive and even after his death, his music was much sought after, so why would I want to pay for an international collaboration because I want to remain relevant in the music industry”. Olamide retorted.
Unfortunately, Olamide and Phyno will continue to be ignored for international honors like MTV Africa Music Awards unless there is a drastic change of logistics in their music.
