Son of Nigerian diplomat jailed for killing prostitute in UK

Son of Nigerian diplomat jailed for killing prostitute in UK
The son of a Nigerian  diplomat in China has received a life jail sentence in the United Kingdom after he was found guilty of raping and murdering a £1,800 -a-night high-class escort.
26- year- old Bala Chinda was convicted by a high court in Aberdeen, Scotland, for the murder of  Jessica McGraa on February 11,2016, only a few weeks after he arrived in Scotland to study at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen.
After a six- hour consideration of the evidence before them, a jury of eight women and seven men on Friday unanimously found Chinda guilty of murdering Miss McGraa, also a Nigerian, in the city centre flat.
Judge Lord Beckett told the jury they had gone about their duties commendably after listening to evidence they may have found ‘very distressing’.
Chinda, he said, had ended the life of a woman described by friends giving evidence as ‘full of fun’ and who had much left to live for.
Chinda was told he must serve a minimum of 18 years.
CCTV footage showed McGraa, 37, had gone to Chinda’s student accommodation in the city’s King Street with him in a taxi before they returned to her apartment a short time later.
She made her last call on her mobile phone a few minutes before surveillance cameras recorded Chinda, 26, walking down the street away from her flat.
Her partially clothed body was found the following day in the bedroom of a flat she had rented in the city’s Union Terrace.
Chinda who changed his phone number after McGraa’s death wept uncontrollably after he was found guilty by the jury.
The court heard that Miss McGraa died of asphyxiation and was probably smothered with a pillow and possibly strangled with her scarf.
Miss McGraa moved to the UK from Nigeria 11 years ago after meeting an English oil worker, Gareth McGraa, who had been working in a Nigerian complex.
They married and had a son but later split.

Two students of the Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Osogbo, were on Saturday shot by a police patrol team while playing football off campus at a pitch in Oke Baale area of the state capital. The students, Kazeem Adesola and Ibrahim Ajao, were critically injured. Police bullets reportedly hit one in the stomarch and the other one in the mouth.
The police men alleged to have come from the Zone 11 of the Nigerian Police Force controlling Osun, Oyo and Ondo states, were said be in mufti and accused some of the students of involving in internet fraud otherwise known as yahoo-yahoo. A student, who witnessed the incident, said the policemen were in the habit of harassing and extorting residents of the area.
He added that an attempt by the students to resist the harassment led to the shooting. Preferring anonymity, he said: “We were playing football when they came. They always come like that to arrest students here. They would say that we are involved in yahoo-yahoo and they would seize our laptops and phones. They would collect money on the pretext of bail.
“But we resisted them on this last one. Within a twinkle of an eye, the policemen started shooting. When the policemen started shooting, we ran away but the bullet hit two of us and they were rushed to the hospital. The bullet hit one near the stomach and the bullet hit the second one in the mouth.
The situation later led to protest by the students of the university, marching from Oke- Baale to Olaiya junction. The protest that lasted several hours caused trafick gridlock around Oke Baale, Oja-Oba and other major roads leading to Gbongan road.
Meanwhile, the state Police Commissioner, Mr. Fimihan Adeoye, said that the policemen have been arrested and detained. The police boss, who told journalists that he had ordered an investigation into the matter, cautioned the students of the institution not to take laws into their hands.
Speaking on the incident, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Labode Popoola, said the students were exposed to danger because they live off campus. He disclosed that plans are underway to build hostels for students on campus in order to monitor their activities and keep them safe.

West Ham sign Fonte for £8m

West Ham sign Fonte for £8m
West Ham have announced the signing of Southampton captain Jose Fonte on a two-and-a-half year deal.
The Hammers sealed the deal for the Portuguese European Cup winner after having an £8million bid accepted by the south coast club, while back in Southampton Fonte’s defensive partner Virgil van Dijk took to Twitter to say he was ‘gutted’ to see his team-mate leave.
Van Dijk tweeted a heartfelt thanks to the Portuguese ace for helping him while at Southampton, after the pair struck up a telepathic defensive understanding out on the pitch.
Fonte was the final remaining piece of the Southampton squad who obtained promotion back to the top flight of English football back in 2012.
In recent weeks the 33-year-old had voiced his dissatisfaction with the Saints and put in an official transfer request with the club.
‘I signed for West Ham because they are a great club and a very big club. They have a lot of fans and I have known for a number of years how passionate they are,’ The defender told whufc.com.
‘The manager was also a very big influence. I thought that he really wanted me and that he sold me the project and the ambition of the club.
‘I also have part of my family living in London and they are big West Ham fans. It just made sense for me at this stage to join West Ham. It is a new challenge and a new beginning and I am looking forward to it.
‘With the way that West Ham is going we can only look to be challenging in the top eight.
‘I told the manager in conversations that we want to win and we want to win trophies. The ambition is big and we need to aim high.
‘West Ham are a massive club and it is an exciting challenge and it should be for everyone. We all need to get together and start working,’ Fonte added.

Rooney breaks Man Utd scoring record with injury-time equaliser

Rooney breaks Man Utd scoring record with injury-time equaliser
Wayne Rooney on Saturday became Manchester United’s all-time leading goal scorer with a sensational stoppage-time free-kick that rescued a point at Stoke City.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that substitute Rooney curled in from the left-hand corner of the penalty box for his 250th United goal, one more than Sir Bobby Charlton.
Stoke looked set for a third straight Premier League win, clinging to a lead given to them when Juan Mata poked Erik Pieters’ cross into his own net in the 18th minute.
Rooney, so often the fulcrum of the United side since joining from Everton as an 18-year-old in 2004, has had to make do with a bit-part role under Jose Mourinho this season.
Indeed, this 546th appearance came from the bench, but still delivered a moment of history.
United had been frustrated for so long by Stoke’s stoic defence and their own wastefulness, and a free-kick awarded just outside the home penalty area looked to be the visitors’ last chance as five minutes of added time ticked down.
Rooney, largely ineffective since joining the action, looked prime to cross, but instead arced a wonderful, dipping, right-footed shot inside the far post past the previously unbeatable Grant.
Not only did the 31-year-old pass the mark of Charlton that had stood since 1973, but he gave United a point that looked to have gone.
United wasted chances, hit the woodwork and were denied by Potters keeper Lee Grant.
But their 25th and final effort at goal preserved a 17-game unbeaten run, albeit if the dropped points mean they lose ground in the race for the top four.
They are three points behind fourth-placed Arsenal and 11 off leaders Chelsea, who both play on Sunday. (NAN)
