Four killed as police, kidnappers clash during rescue

Samson Folarin
No fewer than four suspected kidnappers were killed on Friday after they clashed with some policemen from the Lagos State Police Command.
SPLENSIZY News learnt that a medical doctor with St Francois Hospital, Onikan, identified simply as Dr Ajayi, who was kidnapped by the gang, was rescued unhurt by the police team.
Our correspondent gathered that Ajayi had been abducted on Friday, December 9, 2016, by the gunmen, who attacked the hospital and made away with some valuables.
It was learnt that the case was reported to the police, and a manhunt was launched for the suspects.
A few days after the attack, the suspects were said to have opened negotiation with the victim’s family, demanding a ransom.
A police source said, “When they started negotiation with the family and it was agreed that they would collect about N10m, the police were alerted to it.”
Another source said a police team, which consisted of operatives of the Rapid Response Squad and the anti-kidnapping unit of the police command, tracked some of the suspects to Delta State.
He said the suspects were later discovered to be holding their victim in a thick forest in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State.
“We discovered that their hideout was about nine kilometres into the forest. We pretended as if we had brought the ransom for them. The man they asked to take the ransom was the first to be arrested. We then asked him to lead us into their camp.
“As soon as the kidnappers sighted us, they opened fire and we retaliated with equal firepower. In the process, four of the kidnappers were shot dead.
“The doctor had, however, escaped to the side of the police and was shielded. He was rescued unhurt and has been reunited with his family members,” he added.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the incident, adding that the state police would no longer condone kidnapping.
She said, “The car with which they kidnapped the doctor was recovered, with a gun and a large quantity of clothes, believed to belong to other victims. Meanwhile, the victim has been reunited with his family members.”
When our correspondent reached out to the hospital through a telephone line on its website, a female responder refused to comment.
“I cannot give you such information. The person to speak with you is not around because today is Sunday,” she said.
When our correspondent asked for the contact of the right official, the line went dead

Dog found eating newborn at Bauchi dump

Armstrong Bakam, Bauchi
there was outrage on Sunday at Gwallameji, a suburb of Bauchi, the Bauchi State capital, after a dog was found eating a newborn baby abandoned at a rubbish dump.
A resident of the area, who only gave his name as Isaiah, told PUNCH Metro that he was coming back from church when he came across the scene.
He said, “I was coming back home from my church when I saw many people gather behind a house. I became curious and I went to see what was happening.
“What I saw there was disgusting and annoying. Someone had dumped a newborn baby at a rubbish dump and a dog was feasting on it.
“From what I heard people say, the baby was abandoned alive, but was killed by the dog.
“It was an ugly sight to behold– a dog eating a baby! How can someone do this to an innocent child? How can a human life be treated with such levity? It is inhumane.”
He told our correspondent that some of the onlookers dug a shallow pit and buried the remains of the baby at the dump.
When contacted on the telephone, the traditional chief of Gwallameji, Hassan Ibrahim, confirmed the incident.
“I got a call from someone informing me of the incident, but I told the person that I was not around. When I called the number back, I was told that Wakilin Sarkin Gwallameji (representative of the traditional chief of Gwallameji), Sanusi Mohammed, was already there.
“Since he was there, I continued what I was doing, knowing that he would handle everything well. As I speak with you now, I haven’t met him yet for information about the incident,” Ibrahim said.
Th traditional chief said he was not aware that the baby had been buried at the dump, adding that he was sure his assistant would have informed the police about the incident.
Efforts to get comments from the police were fruitless as several calls to the mobile phone of the acting Police Public Relations Officer, Bauchi State Police Command, Haruna Mohammed, did not go through.
