Corps member feared dead in boat mishap in Bayelsa community

Yenagoa – A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member is feared drowned in a boat accident on Thursday in Okpotuwari Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa. 
Sources in the community sad on Friday that the corps member, who hailed from Anambra drowned when the canoe he boarded capsized. 

Mr Tontiemote Yeiyei, a resident of the community said that the deceased, who was serving at Okpotuwari Community had gone to Ondewari with two of his friends across the Osiana creek by a hand paddled canoe.

Yeiyei said the ill-fated canoe encountered rough currents at the jetty as the deceased and the others were returning to Okpotuwari. 

He said that following the boat accident, sympathisers quickly raised a search party, during which the two others were rescued alive. “The rescue team searched for the remains of the drowned corps member to no avail, and local divers later joined them but they are yet to find the body. 

Hopefully it will be afloat by Saturday. “The survivors have been stabilised and are being taken care of at a clinic,” Yeiyei said. Marine police sources in Southern Ijaw said that the incident was yet to be reported. (NAN)

3 suspected female bombers killed in Maiduguri



Maiduguri – The Borno Police Command said on Friday that three suspected female suicide bombers were shot dead by security agents after they tried to gain entry into Maiduguri to cause havoc.
In a statement, Mr Victor Isuku, the spokesman of the command, said that the bombers were strapped with Improved Explosive Device (IEDs) on their bodies. 
“This morning at about 05:30hrs , three female suicide bombers with IED strapped to their bodies were sighted by military patrol team in Umarari village along Maiduguri/Damboa road near Mulai. 
They were moving towards Maiduguri,” he said. Isuku added: “They were promptly gun down and the IED on two of them exploded killing all three of them”. He said that the police bomb disposal unit was mobilized to the scene immediately. 
“The unexploded IED on the third was rendered safe and detonated by Police Bomb Disposal Unit who promptly mobilized to the scene,” Isuku said.

It is also expected to consist of 30 per cent residential area, 10 per cent commercial residential area, 30 per cent business district. Ten  per cent leisure and entertainment, 20 per cent infrastructure, road, recreation and green park and fibre optics telecommunications. Sewage and fire service station are also mapped out in the Elegushi imperial city project.

Okorocha to drag road contractors in Imo before EFCC

—Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, yesterday said his government would invite the Economic Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to probe contractors who handled rural roads in the State and did not complete them. Okorocha stated this at the Imo International Convention Centre, IICC, in Owerri, during a meeting with the members of the State Development Council, SDC, from the 27 Local Government Areas of the State. 

“We will invite the EFCC to investigate road contractors who never completed the rural roads in Imo given to them. “ The governor said he would not be happy if after his administration, somebody would invite him to start talking about rural roads. He also threatened that the names of those contractors would be published in the newspapers. In the same meeting, the governor announced that his administration has concluded plans to release N14 billion for rural road construction. 

He said,  “We have concluded that N14 billion will be released for construction of rural roads in Imo State,” adding that “strategic roads in each of the 27 Local Government Areas in the State will be considered.” According to Okorocha: “The officials of the Social Development Council, SDC and Community Government Council, CGC,  will collaborate with the members of their community to decide which road to  be constructed and how to apply the money to archive the purpose for which the money was given to them. “Also, through the SDC, we have planned to renovate our schools in the rural areas, recruit 3,000 graduates, pay pensioners as well as boost agricultural businesses.”
