EFCC recovers another cash haul of N250m

EFCC recovers another cash haul of N250m
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday intercepted huge sums of money in various currencies totalling N250 million at the popular Balogun market in Lagos.
This came barely three days after the commission recovered N449 million at an abandoned bureau de change in Victoria Island, Lagos.
Spokesman of the EFCC, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, who disclosed Monday’s incident in a statement, said the discovery followed a tip-off from a whistle blower.
The intercepted monies, according to him, include 547,730 Euros, 21,090 Pounds and N5,648,500 .
He said the total haul was about N250 million at the prevailing exchange rate at the parallel market.
“The interception followed information that about N250 million cash was being moved somewhere in the market for conversion into foreign currencies by unnamed persons.
“Operatives responded timely, met the money in Bureau de Change (BDC) office, but a large chunk of it had been converted into Euro and Pounds sterling.
“The BDC operators found in possession of the monies claimed they were acting on behalf of their boss who sent the money to them from one of the Northern states in Nigeria,” Uwujaren said.
He said two persons apprehended in the course of the raid were assisting the comission in its investigation.

Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham snubs Nigeria for England

Chelsea teen forward, Tammy Abraham has asked to be left out of the Super Eagles squad for their upcoming AFCON 2019 qualifiers against South Africa.
Tammy says he wants to focus on playing for England.
The 19-year-old is on loan to Championship side, Bristol City.

He has 22 goals this season in all competitions, a tally which could have been more if not for the injury he sustained that saw him miss some games.
He went into the record books when he scored his 19th league goal of the season in the English Championship to become the first teenager ever to score 16 or more goals in a Championship season.
Nigeria football authorities are said to have approached the father of the England youth international, who incidentally is a close childhood friend of the president of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, Amaju Pinnick, but their request to see him switch allegiance to Nigeria immediately was turned down.

“He is keen on progressing through the ranks of the English national team set up. He has been told he is the future with age not on the side of Wayne Rooney, Jamie Vardy and Jermaine Defoe who are all ahead of him in the England pecking order,” Owngoal quoted a source as saying.
“Tammy won’t be in the Nigerian team for upcoming qualifiers, maybe in the future but not so fast. He has confirmed his participation for England at the U-20 World Cup in Korea, which is around same time when Nigeria will be taking on South Africa.
Tammy becomes the second Anglo-Nigerian player who has opted to represent England instead of Nigeria within the space of one week, as Everton Ademola Lookman also did same last week.

Thousands of Police mourn officer killed in Westminster attack

Thousands of Police mourn officer killed in Westminster attack
Thousands of police officers on Monday lined the streets of London to pay tribute to their colleague, Keith Palmer, killed in the Westminster terrorist attack about three weeks ago.
The 48-year-old policeman was stabbed by attacker Khalid Masood outside the parliament on March 22.
No fewer than 5,000 police officers from across Britain looked on as the hearse carrying Palmer’s coffin passed through central London to Southward cathedral.
Palmer was unarmed as he guarded the entrance to parliament when he was stabbed by 52-year-old Masood, who was then shot dead by police.
Prior to attacking Palmer, Masood deliberately drove a car into pedestrians, killing four people and injuring no fewer than 50.
