Activists to protest against Buhari on Thursday

Two groups of youths and activists have fixed April 6 to protest at the National Assembly against what they described as President Muhammadu Buhari’s attempt to silence federal lawmakers.
This is contained in a statement jointly signed by the Movement for the Advancement of National Transformation (MANTRA) and the Coalition in Defence of Nigerian Democracy and Coalition (CDNDC).
They warned that Nigeria under Buhari may descend “speedily into the unenviable state of anomie, anarchy, chaos and doom where impunity reigns supreme”.
The groups alleged relentless campaign of calumny orchestrated by the executive arm of government to silence the legislature with the inordinate aim of riding roughshod over Nigerians without being checked.
The full statement below:
Executive/Legislature Face-Off: Enough of this Executive Recklessness
“We have observed with great shock the relentless campaign of calumny orchestrated by the executive arm of government to silence the legislature with the inordinate aim of riding roughshod over Nigerians without being checked.
This severe campaign follows impudent acts of autocracy and tyranny against the senate in particular and the national assembly in general by the executive with the sole aim of undermining the senate and emasculating the national assembly for very obvious reasons.
After having succeeded in intimidating, harassing and nearly emasculating the judiciary, it is only natural that to complete the job of routing every democratic impediment to the excesses and recklessness of the executive, the legislature is their next port of call.
These unfortunate developments have put us as a nation at the great risk of descending speedily into the unenviable state of anomie, anarchy, chaos and doom where impunity reigns supreme.
These follows the continued denigration, humiliation and scurrilous attacks visited on the other arms of government by an overbearing executive that has found it extremely difficult to subject itself to the principles and tenets of democracy which include “separation of powers” and “checks and balances”.
The latest attacks on the senate in particular has not come to discerning Nigerians as a surprise as we all saw the handwriting on the wall a long time ago.
For an executive which disobeys court orders with impunity, insolently defying the judiciary in the process and ridiculing that arm of government with disparaging comments from government officials just to serve their own pecuniary interests, we knew it was only a matter of time for the legislature to become its next victim.
We are even more appalled by the defence put up by some prominent Nigerians for the excesses of the executive. These hypocrites who have joined in bitterly criticizing the senate over its rejection of Ibrahim Magu as the substantive chairman of the EFCC, hailed the DSS reports that were used to intimidate and harass the judiciary recently but have turned around to ignore, reject and even criticize the same DSS’ report with all its weighty allegations against Magu.
Would it have been advisable for the senate to ignore such security report and confirm Magu just to satisfy the whims and caprices of a few individuals in the executive at the expense of national security and image? Even the DSS report concluded that “Magu has failed the integrity test and will eventually constitute a liability to the anti-corruption drive of the present administration”. Why should any right thinking citizen expect the senate to ignore this warning?
In fact, in other climes where there is still a modicum of morality and integrity among the executive arm of government, Mr Ibrahim Magu should by now have been arrested and prosecuted based on the report of the DSS against him, rather he is enjoying the patronage of those who are too blind to see the incurable injury they are causing our democracy just to spite the senate.
Furthermore, it is quite laughable that the same Magu who has been described as fearless by his patrons has not been able to muster the necessary courage to move against Dr Kayode Fayemi, Rotimi Amaechi and a plethora of other executive officials serving in this “saintly” government despite the petitions and evidence against them.
It is very obvious that the senate has become a scapegoat and an instrument of distraction in the hands of the executive to divert the attention of Nigerians from the biting hunger in the land, infrastructural coma, collapse of power and the abysmal state of the nation’s economy which the Buhari-led government has plunged us into.
Rather than dissipate energy on undermining the senate just to score needless cheap political points, we urge the executive to wake up to its responsibilities and stop the wanton killings going on all over the nation, obey court orders, stem the nation’s unabated descent into autocracy and rescue the economy. It is only after this has been done that they can boast of any moral right to criticize other arms of government.
Finally, we hereby call on the Senate and the House of Representatives not to allow themselves to be cowed by the antics of anti-democratic forces in the executive and other places trying to impose military-styled rule upon the nation through the backdoor. We shall resist such antics to the last!
Based on the foregoing, we have concluded plans and started mobilizing other CSOs and good-spirited Nigerians to defend democracy and the institution of the legislature by staging a solidarity rally to the national assembly on 6th of April, 2017.
This has become necessary because we know there cannot be democracy without the legislature and where there is a weak legislature fascism rules.
We say enough of this executive recklessness!”
Signed:
1)Jude Ndukwe – Convener, Movement for the Advancement of National Transformation (MANTRA)
2)Ariyo Dare-Atoye – Co-Convener, Coalition in Defence of Nigerian Democracy and Coalition (CDNDC)

2023: Ndigbo need restructuring not presidency – Eastern Consultative Assembly

A South-East pressure group, the Eastern Consultative Assembly (ECA), has come hard on the All Progressives Congress, APC, led federal government over the stand of the party’s leaders in the zone on Nigeria president of Igbo extraction.
They insisted that Ndigbo were more interested in restructuring of the country than occupying the position of presidency.
However, in a communique after its meeting in Snug, the ECA described APC leaders as sycophants who were chasing shadows.
In attendance at the meeting were traditional ‎rulers, religious leaders, Students’ Unions, Traders Associations, Women’s Groups, Niger Delta Youth Movement, Town Unions, Youth Organizations, among others.
The assembly deliberated on the state of the Nation, and issued a strong-worded communique, which was signed by‎ Chief Mrs. Maria Okwor and Evangelist Elliot Ugochukwu-Uko, the chairman and the secretary of the ECA, respectively.
“The childish and very annoying narrative, being bandied about by President Buhari’s manfriday, to wit: that an Igbo President in 2023 is the magic wand to all our miseries, is quite idiotic and unintelligent.
“Refusing to address the core issues responsible for the general loss of confidence and loss of faith ruling the land, which is, the current unworkable unitary structure and digressing to apportion years for ethnic domination of Nigeria is irritating and a confirmation that Nigeria is truly heading for collapse. Nupe president in 2031, Urhobo President in 2039, Birom President in 2047, Igbo President in 2023 etc. is all bunkum and provocative distraction. We must face reality today, and agree consensually on a truly Federal structure, that will unite the country. It should not matter where a President comes from, if true federalism is practiced.
“The quite unnecessary paranoia exhibited by the FG in hiring and sponsoring demonstrators to intimidate Amnesty International is frightening. The future of democracy is clearly threatened in any country where the government is both afraid and intolerant of the truth. The extra-judicial killings of unarmed citizens are documented in video for all to see. Struggling to intimidate Amnesty International is crude, sickening and despicable.
“Clearly avoidable internal crisis within the ruling APC is worrisome and quite disturbing. E.g. Saraki/Melaye versus Ibrahim Magu, DSS DG Lawal Daura versus Ibrahim Magu, senate versus customs CG, etc. That the ruling party is overheating the polity unnecessarily, speaks volumes about the quality of leadership Nigerians are made to suffer at this time. Pity!

“We are surprised at the refusal of the FG to understand and appreciate the truth that restructuring Nigeria is inevitable. FG must also accept the reality that the FG unwittingly made Nnamdi Kanu both a symbol of the struggle and hero of the people. Only an early release of Kanu and constructive dialogue with the people can heal the land now.
“The time has finally come for the electorate of Eastern Nigeria, a region that has suffered so much humiliation in contemporary Nigeria, to wake up and take a stand for the future of our progeny. Accordingly, political hustlers and pseudo leaders, who have mindlessly exploited and abused our trust and good nature, must be retired forthwith. We must develop parameters, standards and values for leadership. In other to raise the bar in the quality of leadership which we think is ideal. We must begin to endorse, encourage and celebrate only leaders who are willing to make sacrifices by placing the interest of the masses above self interest. The time to start is now.
“And finally, the quite unreasonable and unhelpful delay in reconstructing Nigeria into true fiscal federalism, built on regional autonomy, is the only problem holding Nigeria down today. There is no other way out. Delay is dangerous.”

Expose looters of Nigeria, you know them – Kalu dares US, UK, Germany

Former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, has urged the Governments of the United States, United Kingdom and Germany to expose the real treasury looters in Nigeria.
Kalu also called on the Federal Government to institute a process where famous auditing firms will audit all public office holders to ascertain their sources of wealth.
According to him: “US, UK, Germany know those who have stashed millions of dollars, transferred directly from Nigeria to western countries, without working for it.”
The former governor said the looters acquired the wealth with no trace of evidence of business transactions, services or contracts.
He also said Nigeria needed three basic things he listed as justice, obeisance to the rule of law and accountability to move forward.
“A nation is supposed to be a committed area that must have the interest of the citizens as priority. It is only in Nigeria that a form is clearly specified to identify tribe, state, local government and religion.
“That means that the government of Nigeria since 1960 have been in support of tribalism. There is no country in Nigeria that wants to move forward and still have such specifications in a form.
“Corruption is the greatest problem in Nigeria. Those past leaders who claimed to be fighting corruption were only accumulating wealth.
“I was governor for eight years. And in that eight years, I never knew somebody can take public fund as his own. I never knew somebody aside security vote can take away people’s money.
“People who had nothing came into office and turned to multi billionaires and nobody asks questions about how the money was made.
“I call on the government to restore a process whereby the KPMG, PWC, Deloitte and others be given opportunity to audit all our past leaders.
“You can not just make someone a Governor today and next, he buys a house in Victoria Island without stating how he got the money.
“Likewise a minister and he is already buying houses in Maitama or Asokoro. Sometimes, possibly someone you know before.”
Kalu also spoke on what has become of those of them who supported the political movement in Nigeria prior to the military leaving the political stage.
He said: “Among the people who supported political movement in Nigeria in 1998, few of us are being tried. I had mentioned this in most forums I have been.
“The former President Olusegun Obasanjo wrote to your President, George Bush Jnr, requesting that I should be arrested in the United States. But your President after investigation said no.
“They equally wrote to the British prime minister, but he disagreed after investigation. But I am being tried in Nigeria for a law I do not know where it comes from. But I cannot dwell on this since it’s in the Court of competent jurisdiction.
“Last time I spoke in Washington DC during a dinner, I repeated the same thing. Nigeria is a beautiful country where given the appropriate rule of law.
“If everyone is made to obey the rule of the land and respect the law; If all our people are made to subject themselves to the laws of the land, Nigeria will be a beautiful place to live.”
Speaking on the Nigerian economy and the orientation of the leaders and the led, the former governor said: “We need people who will see Nigeria as Nigeria.
‘People who will not attach any religious or tribal sentiments about the country. We need people that will call a spade a spade. Last week, I urged President Muhammadu Buhari to tackle the economy the way he tackled Boko Haram.
“In all honesty and being factual, I still suggest that President Buhari as a matter of urgency should declare economic emergency. The economy is in very bad shape and the citizens are not happy.
“What we also need Nigerians to do is to come out and support civil democracy. Civil democracy is the only way interests of others can be protected. People blame politicians and everybody but themselves.”

Biafra: Remove Itsekiri land from map to avoid civil war – Itsekiri Youths warn IPOB, MASSOB

The Itsekiri National Youth Congress, INYC, has called on the agitators for a sovereign state of Biafra to remove Itsekiri land from the map of the Biafra.
This was contained in a communiqué issued in Warri, Delta State by the President of the INYC, Esimaje Awani yesterday.

He stated that Itsekiri were an indigenous ethnic group of Nigeria’s Niger Delta region of Delta State presently resident in Warri South, Warri North and Warri South West Local Government Areas bordering the Atlantic Coast of Nigeria as their homeland with their only neighbours being the Bini to the North, the Ijaw to the South, the Urhobo to the East and the Yoruba of Ondo State to the Northwest.
He warned that, “Itsekiri and its territories should not be included in any IPOB or Biafra plan.”
According to Awani, from about 1490 – 1884, the Itsekiri had an independent political kingdom known as Warri Kingdom that was not subordinate to any of the World Powers in Europe or any African Kingdom.
He added that it was in 1894 when the Niger Coast Protectorate was established that it came under the protection of Her Britannic Majesty vide the Treaty of 1884.

Awani pointed out that by the map of the Republic of Biafra of May 1967, Edo and Delta states of Nigeria was never envisioned as a part of Biafra by the legendary Chukwuemeka Dim Ojukwu, saying that the current inclusion of present Delta State, including the Itsekiri National territories of Warri Kingdom without due consultation is preposterous, totally unacceptable and ultimately invalid.
He further explained that by another Treaty of 1894, the Itsekiri remained under the British until the Colony and Protectorate of Southern Nigeria was created and in 1914, without consultation with the Itsekiri people, Lord Lugard decreed Nigeria into existence and made Warri Kingdom (Itsekiri homeland) part of this enterprise.
His words,“IPOB and Biafra have their rights of agitation for freedom of self determination as enshrined in the United Nations declaration, but other minority ethnic groups not duly consulted and their approval secured should not be dragged along to avoid the mistake that led to the civil war.
“The magnanimity of Itsekiri in allowing Igbos celebrate the Igbo Cultural Day in our land should not be taken for granted as we urge IPOB to de-list Itsekiri territories and Warri areas from its proposed map.”
