Expert urges FG to build water plant in rural areas

The Federal Government has been urged to build water treatment plants in perennial rivers in rural areas to avert water borne diseases.

Dr Samuel Ibrahim, a senior lecturer in Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, made the call on Thursday in Lapai in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Ibrahim, an expert in domestic water resources, Department of Geography and Regional Planning said that such treatment plant would be able to solve water problem among the rural dwellers.

“Rural dwellers are more vulnerable to epidemics because of poor quality of water at their disposal, “he said.

He explained that the water treatment plant would be veritable if built close to perennial rivers as a preventive measure against water borne diseases.

According to him, the bulk of the food comes from the rural areas and the water they are living on most time is contaminated by animals in the cause of grazing around such rivers.

“some of the local foods (fura de nunu) the rural women bring to the city are sometimes contaminated by use of infected water from rivers already contaminated by animals’ dung,” he said.

Ibrahim said that as a result of poor water quality, a lot of diseases can also be transported from the rural areas to the cities.

British govt sets out Brexit plan to ‘end EU supremacy’

Prime Minister Theresa May’s Conservative Government set out its plans on Thursday for a “Great Repeal Bill” to incorporate EU law into British law and “end the supremacy of EU lawmakers” after Britain leaves the European Union.

The government white paper “lays out a pragmatic and principled approach to converting EU law into UK law on the day we leave the EU — giving businesses, workers and investors as much certainty as possible,” Brexit Secretary David Davis told parliament.

“It also means the negotiation over our future economic partnership with the EU will be unlike any other in history, because we will start from a point of exact equivalence,” Davis said.

“After that, it will be for parliament to determine what EU legislation it wants to amend, repeal or improve — finally ending the supremacy of EU lawmakers,” he said.

The white paper was published one day after May formally notified Brussels of Britain’s intention to leave the EU, in a letter triggering two years of Brexit negotiations.

Ahead of the publication, the library of the House of Commons, parliament’s elected lower house, warned that assimilating EU law into British law was “potentially one of the largest legislative projects ever undertaken in the UK.”

The parliamentary library estimated that more than 13 per cent of primary and secondary legislation enacted in Britain between 1993 and 2004 is EU related.

Human rights and trade union groups have raised concerns that some rights could be eroded in the legal transition.

Vietnam criticises U.S. for awarding imprisoned blogger

The U.S. State Department’s recent award to a prominent imprisoned Vietnamese blogger was “inappropriate,” a Vietnamese government spokesman said on Thursday.

Blogger and environmental activist, Nguyen Quynh, also known by her pen name, Mother Mushroom, was one of 13 women honoured with the International Women of Courage Award on Wednesday by first lady Melania Trump.

Quynh, who was unable to attend the ceremony, has been imprisoned in Vietnam since Oct. 10, 2016, on charges of “conducting propaganda against the state”.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Le Hai Binh defended her arrest at a press conference in Hanoi, adding that the award was “not beneficial” to bilateral relations.

“Vietnam thinks that the U.S. State Department awarding a person who is now in detention for legal violations in Vietnam is impartial, inappropriate and not beneficial for the development of the two countries,’’ Binh said.

Vietnam, which is ruled by a single party communist state, has been courting ties with the U.S. in recent years.

Reports say that Chinese maritime claims to most of the South China Sea, including areas claimed by Vietnam, and has worried Hanoi and Washington alike.

During a state visit to Vietnam in May 2016, then U.S. President Barack Obama opened the door to arms sales to Vietnam when he announced the end to the last remaining sanctions on weapons.
