Saraki, Aregbesola, Ambode, Ngige pay tributes

Saraki, Aregbesola, Ambode, Ngige pay tributes
Saraki
Nigerians from all walks of life yesterday expressed shock at the death of the military governor of the defunct Western Region, Gen. Adeyinka Adebayo, who passed on in Lagos yesterday. They paid glowing tribute to the Iyin-Ekiti-born general, who they said worked for Nigeria’s unity.
He was a fine officer, says Saraki
Senate President Bukola Saraki expressed grief over the death of the defunct Western Region governor.
In a statement, the Senate President described the late general as a courageous and fine officer, who spent the most active part of his life in the service and defense of his fatherland.
He commiserated with the immediate family of the deceased, the government and people of Southwest and Nigerians in general over the incident.
Describing death as an inevitable end for all mortals, Saraki noted that late Gen. Adebayo lived a highly productive, fulfilled and eventful life worthy of emulation.
Saraki said: “It is sad that we have lost an elder statesman whose wealth of experience and fatherly advice is still needed to help us navigate our way out of the present socio-economic challenges confronting the country at this time.
“We are however consoled by the fact that he served the nation conscientiously and gallantly as a courageous officer and gentleman. His life and lifestyle is worthy of emulation. I believe both present and future generations would continue to draw inspiration from his patriotism and loyalty to the national cause. He shall be sorely missed.”
He urged the immediate family of the deceased to be consoled by the good name left behind by the late general and prayed God to grant the soul of the deceased eternal rest.
We have lost another patriot, Aregesola
Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola described the former military governor of the defunct Western Region as a patriot, as he joined well-meaning Nigerians in commiserating with the deceased family.
In a statement, the governor said the death of Gen Adebayo has robbed Nigeria, especially the Yoruba race, of an elder statesman.
It reads: “Gen. Adebayo served his fatherland well. He was a fine officer of the Nigerian Army and did his best in all the capacities where he served. The history of our country is incomplete with adequate mention of this fine officer.”
Recalling the deceased interests in the growth and the development of the Yoruba race, Aregbesola said the former President of the YCE tried to ensure the unity and progress of the Yoruba people.
His words: “We receive with heavy heart the death of one of Nigeria’s finest officers of the Nigerian Army, who fought for the unity of nation.
“No doubt, he is a soldier of repute and commander of men. He distinguished himself in his chosen profession both at home and abroad.
“The history of post-independence Nigeria and the crises that threatened the young nation’s existence will be incomplete without a chapter for this courageous soldier.”
Ambode:  Nigeria has lost a great patriot
Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode expressed sadness over the demise of elder statesman, describing Adebayo’s demise as a great loss to the nation, especially to the Southwest.
Ambode said in statement: “Gen. Adebayo was a great patriot and one of Nigeria’s foremost nationalists who never shied away from expressing his love for his country and his people. He was a brilliant administrator who was known for his dedication and zeal to serve his fatherland.
“Those who know papa would attest to the fact that he was a man of many parts. For the Yoruba nation, this is a great loss. His passion to see the integration of the South West region was second to none. No doubt, we would miss his wise counsel especially at this time when our nation is on a path to rebirth.”
Commiserating with the family of the late elder statesman, the governor urged them to uphold the ideals he stood and fought for, saying that the nation will continue to draw inspiration from his life and times.
“His demise, just like that of our heroes past, must never be in vain. There can be no better time to unite together to achieve a better and more prosperous Nigeria”, he said.
Fasanmi , Fasehun mourn Adebayo
Afenifere leader, Senator Ayo Fasanmi  expressed shock over the death of the former Military governor  and  Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE) President.
Fasanmi in a condolence message stated: “I am greatly shocked to hear the sad news of the death of a compatriot of our dear General Adeyinka Adebayo. The great General had come, had seen and conquered; leaving an indelible foot-print on sand of our time.
“His death is an irreparable loss not only to the Yorubas but to the entire nation that he served as an indefatigable army General and Governor. Please accept my heartfelt condolences for the irreparable loss. May his soul rest in perfect peace”.
The Odua Peoples’ Congress (OPC) Founder Dr Fredrick Fasehun  described the death of Gen. Adebayo as a big loss not only to the Yoruba but the nation.
Fasehun in a telephone interview said:  “Why should it happened now that the Southwest leaders have united to fight the course of the Yoruba nation. But who are we to query God, our creator”
He prayed God to grant the family  the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss and grant the deceased  eternal rest.
His death a personal loss, says Adelabu
Former Ekiti State Governor Prof Modupe Adelabu described Gen Adebayo’s death as a personal loss to her, recounting how the former military governor stood by her late father.
Mrs Adelabu said: “Baba’s death is a personal loss to me and the entire Adejugbe family. He stood in the gap for our late father who was a friend and brother to him.
“Baba we would surely miss your fatherly role. You were the last man standing indeed and you stood firmly and right. Sleep on dear father.”

10 feared dead in an auto crash at Ile Ife

10 feared dead in Ile Ife clash
•Govt imposes curfew •Many injured, cars, houses touched
The Osun State government yesterday slammed a two-day curfew on Ile-Ife, following a violent clash that claimed 10 lives.
The government also deployed massive security to curtail what it described as “breach of the peace in the area which has led to avoidable destruction of lives and property”.
It said the curfew, which began yesterday from 6pm to 7am, would be in force till tomorrow.
It was gathered 10 people might have been killed and many injured in the clash, which started on Tuesday.
The violence continued yesterday in Sabo, where the Ooni’s palace is.
About 30 vehicles and many houses were burnt in the area.
A fight between two people – a man and a woman – of different tribes over who to sweep the front of a stall, reportedly ignited the crisis on Tuesday.
The husband of the woman allegedly challenged the man, who was said to have made fun of him.
The crisis worsened yesterday as daggers, cutlasses, axes, guns and other weapons were freely used.
Before the police arrived, the clash had extended to Oduduwa College Street and Moore on Ikesa Road and Lagere, the commercial nerve centre of Ife.
Though the casualty figure could not be confirmed, investigation showed the police deployed to the scene reportedly carried a number of bodies in their vehicles to an unidentified hospital.
It was learnt that the first batch of police patrol that came were stoned by an angry mob before reinforcement arrived.
It took the efforts of soldiers and policemen to bring the situation under control.
They reportedly fired several bullets to disperse the mob.
Policemen and soldiers were patrolling major streets in the town.
Ife indigenes yesterday protested at the Ooni’s palace.
Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, who called for calm, appealed to the people not to take laws in their hands.
He warned that anyone caught would be punished.
As at 4pm yesterday, shops and markets at Sabo and Lagere were closed.
Some pupils took refuge at the  Ooni’s palace. Parents were advised through a radio broadcast to go to there for their wards.
The government said it has deployed security forces to the scene of the crisis.
A statement from the office of the governor, signed by the Director, Bureau of Communication and Strategy, Semiu Okanlawon, assured of the readiness of the security forces to quell the face off.
It was gathered that the clash was between factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, (NURTW), Abuja branch and Ile-Ife branch.
Sarun of Ile Ife Chief Yemi Oriowo said an Hausa man slapped the wife of NURTW Vice-President (name withheld), which led to a free-for-all.
Police spokesman Folasade Odoro said the police were on top of the situation.
He said peace has restored to the town and warned that anybody caught fomenting trouble would be prosecuted.

NLC to Fed Govt: workers’ patience running out on wage review

NLC to Fed Govt: workers’ patience running out on wage review
THE Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) said yesterday workers were running out of patience with the Federal Government over delay in negotiation of a new minimum wage.
It said the workers could not wait indefinitely for government to respond at its own time.
Speaking at the Fourth NLC National Gender Conference in Abuja, NLC President Comrade Ayuba Wabba said workers were getting tired of government’s delay tactics in constituting a tripartite committee to negotiate a new minimum wage.
He asked the government to act immediately
Wabba said the although wage was due for renegotiation after five years, the Buhari administration was dragging its feet in constituting a tripartite committee as is the practice to negotiate a new minimum wage.
He said “against the background of the harsh economic times and the impact on the working people, we cannot wait indefinitely for government to respond at its own time”.
“Though, we have been told by the administration that the panel will be constituted, we enjoined the government to urgently sort out whatever is the constraint it is facing and act on the matter before we are forced to take actions that may be unpleasant,” he said.
According to Wabba, “it is no longer news that our country is in a severe recession and prices of virtually all consumable and non-consumable items have skyrocket.  In the last 12 or more months, the inflationary trend in the economy has gone over the roof, and the mass of our people, the salaried and the teeming millions of the unemployed, are facing very difficult times.
“Amid these difficulties, we have contended with a number of state governments  that have misplaced priorities and have regularly refused to pay workers in the state pay roll, their salaries as at when due.
Wabba stressed the congress’ commitment in promoting gender equity and gender participation in the affairs of trade unions in the country.

Recession will end before December, says Fed Govt

Recession will end before December, says Fed Govt
Nigerians got yesterday some cheery news – the recession that has kept everyone panting will end before the year runs out.
The yet to be passed 2017 Budget has been structured to achieve the goal, Budget and Planning Minister Udoma Udo Udoma told State House correspondents at the end of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.
He said: “Yes, we are determine, to get the economy out of the recession before the end of this year. And the 2017 budget is structured to do just that.
“So that is why we are anxious to get the budget passed so that we can begin the implementation and begin to take all the steps we need to get the economy out of recession.”
The ministry briefed the Council on the National Bureau of Statistics Third Quarter GDP Report and the full report on 2016.
“I also informed council of the release of the Economic Recovery Growth Plan which is already on the website of the ministry of budget and National Planning as well as the Budget Office,” Udoma said, adding:
“With regards to the NBS report, as you are aware, the fourth quarter of the economy contracted by 1.3 per cent, which is lower level of contraction than the previous year and which indicates that we are already turning and we are beginning to recover even though we are still in recession.
“And the overall result was better than what many people projected. The IMF report had thought the GDP for 2016 was going to be -1.8 per cent and it turned out -1.5, so that’s better than expected but we are not out of the woods.
“It is encouraging but we have to do and continue to do more to make sure that we get the economy out of the recession this year.
“So we are encouraged but we are even more energised to put in more effort in agriculture, which is doing very well to do even better. To put in more efforts in solid minerals to make sure that our infrastructure is revamped because that is what will stimulate our economy, if we continue in this way.”
Udoma went on: “You saw yesterday the acting president went to break ground for the railway from Lagos to Ibadan all the way to Kano.  As you know, the economic recovery and growth plan focuses on three objectives; one is restoring growth and that is what we are determined to do.
“Two, inviting our people; our people are our greatest resource and three, building a competitive economy because ultimately the economy cannot do well unless it is competitive.
“And as you know the five priority areas that we have are one, stabilising the micro economic environment. Two, achieving agriculture and food security. Three, ensuring energy sufficiency – power as well as petroleum products. Four, improving transportation infrastructure and five, driving industrialisation, focusing on small and medium scale enterprises. So we are determined with this plan to make this economy great again. We are determined by the end of the plan to move from the negative growth that we experienced in 2016 to the growth rate of 7 per cent by 2020.”
