Prayer is the only thing that can save Nigeria now – Tambuwal

Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal
Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State says fervent prayers by Nigerians remain the only solution to the country’s woes.
The governor made the remark in Sokoto on Monday at an event to celebrate Eid el-Maulud, the birth of Prophet Muhammad, organised by the state’s chapter of the Islamic  Shababul Qadiriya Movement.
Represented  by the state’s Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Alhaji Mani Katami, the governor said,  “prayers should be intensified by all Nigerians, irrespective of religious, political or ethnic differences.
“With prayers, Nigeria will soon overcome her challenges.
“We should also continue to be our brothers’ keepers, be patriotic, love one another and accord top priority to the indivisibility, as well as the unity of the nation.”
He also urged parents to continue to enroll their children to acquire both religious and western education.
Tambuwal solicited the support of Nigerians to the ongoing anti-corruption fight by President Muhammadu Buhari, saying that corruption was abhorred by both Islam and Christianity.

Pogbas to clash as Man Utd draw Saint-Etienne

Manchester United will take on Saint-Etienne in the last 32 of the Europa League, with Jose Mourinho’s side hosting the French club in the first leg, after Monday’s draw.
The tie will see United and France midfielder Paul Pogba, the world’s most expensive player, come up against his elder brother Florentin, the Guinea international defender.
“That’s a nice thing,” said Mourinho at a press conference on Monday. “Paul was already laughing about it and for sure his brother is also laughing.
“It has happened a few times in the history football and it’s a nice thing.”
The teams met in the now defunct Cup Winners’ Cup first round in 1977, with United winning 3-1 on aggregate.
On that occasion, United were forced to host the second leg in the southern English city of Plymouth, 450 kilometres away, following crowd trouble in the first leg in France.
Mourinho’s men finished second in Group A behind Fenerbahce of Turkey while Saint-Etienne topped Group C. After also having to go to Ukraine to face Zorya Luhansk in the group stage, United’s Portuguese manager is pleased that there will be no long away trip this time.
“The good thing is the travel distance. We were very unlucky in the group phase, we had to go very far, it was very difficult to go to Turkey, Ukraine,” he said.
“Now we go to France because the flight is easy and it’s not an easy period, there are lots of games, so that is good.”
Saint-Etienne, 10-time French champions and European Cup runners-up in 1976, are currently eighth in Ligue 1.
“Saint-Etienne is an historic old club with lots of tradition. People of my generation will never forget that (Michel) Platini team and it will be difficult because every team now is a good team in the competition.
“For sure, Manchester United is one of the big names in the competition but we have two months without the Europa League, two months to forget it, then we will see.”
The other Premier League representative, Tottenham Hotspur, will face Gent of Belgium after being eliminated from the Champions League at the group stage.
Villarreal of Spain will face Italian giants Roma in one of the standout ties, while Bundesliga club Borussia Moenchengladbach were drawn against Fiorentina of Italy.
The first legs will be played on Thursday, February 16, with the return matches a week later.

Group urges world leaders to reject same-sex marriage

The International Organization for the Family (IOF) has urged religious, political, social, and civic leaders across the world not to yield to external pressures on same-sex marriage.
This appeal is contained in a statement issued by participants at the just concluded meeting of the organization held in Cape Town, South Africa, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos on Monday.
The statement tagged “Cape Town Declaration” reaffirmed the critical role of traditional man-woman marriage as the bedrock of civilization.
According to the statement, ‘the family is the “first and primordial community” and that marriage is “the conjugal bond of man and woman.
“This definition is not a matter of preference or temperament or taste,” the signers declared, but “the heart of any just social order.”
“Throwing down the gauntlet to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and trangender (LGBT) lobby, a thriving culture will firmly resist every push to redefine marriage to include: same-sex or group bonds, or sexually open or temporary ones.’’
The document also declared that the nature of marriage as between one man and one woman is “a truth that no government can change,”
It said that the declaration was a historic step in the global fight to preserve the truth about marriage.
It said that forcing the agenda of same-sex marriage on nations by manipulation of foreign aid or the likes was a deplorable practice.
Those that signed the declaration had pledged to work toward recovering the true understanding of marriage in places where governments had imposed an unwanted and unwarranted distortion of marriage upon society, it said.
“Beyond affixing their names to the document, signers also pledged to resist the rising cultural imperialism of western powers whose governments seek nothing less than the ideological colonization of the family.
“Bowing to no earthly power, using every just measure, we shall not falter or flag until the truth about marriage is embraced in our laws and honoured in our lands,’’ the document stated.
“The new text is reminiscent of the 2009 Manhattan Declaration, which garnered some 440,000 signatures in its first year.
“While the Manhattan Declaration targeted three points: the sanctity of life, the dignity of marriage and freedom of religion, the Cape-Town Declaration chose to focus specifically on marriage and the family.
“Our goal is to gain 2 million signatures on the Cape-Town Declaration within a year from today: December 11, the Universal Day of Human Rights,” the statement said.
NAN reports that this statement was released on Dec.10, the International Human Rights Day to mark the anniversary of the proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the United Nations General Assembly held in Paris on December 10, 1948.
Mr Brian Brown, President of (IOF), Bishop Emmanuel Badejo of the Catholic Diocese of Oyo, Nigeria, as well as  undreds of other religious, political, social and civic leaders from other continents appended their signatures to the document .
