Rights group blasts Ethiopia journalist arrests

Ethiopia
Campaigners on Thursday accused Ethiopia of an “intensifying crackdown” on the media, with at least three journalists and bloggers arrested or sentenced under a state of emergency since October.
“In recent weeks, Ethiopian authorities have jailed a newspaper editor, as well as two members of the award-winning Zone 9 bloggers’ collective, which has faced continuous legal harassment on terrorism and incitement charges,” the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said.
“A fourth journalist has been missing for a week; his family fears he is in state custody,” the rights group added in a statement, calling for Ethiopia to immediately release the detained journalists.
Ethiopia declared a six-month state of emergency on October 9 — an unprecedented move by a government that has been in power for 25 years — as it pursued a brutal crackdown on anti-government protesters that has left hundreds of people dead, according to rights groups.
The country has been in political crisis for around a year as unrest in the central Oromo region spread to Amhara in the north.
More than 11,000 people have been arrested since the start of the state of emergency, according to government figures.
Getachew Worku, the editor-in-chief of independent weekly Ethio-Mihidar, was sentenced to a year in jail Tuesday for “defamation and spreading false information” after he accused members of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church of corruption, the CPJ said.
TV journalist Abdi Gada, who was unemployed at the time of his disappearance, has not been seen since November 9.
The two arrested bloggers are Befekadu Hailu and Natnael Feleke, whose Zone 9 group has written about political repression, corruption and social injustice.
Hailu was freed from jail in October 2015 after 18 months behind bars accused of “inciting violence” with his anti-government writing. He was rearrested last month.
Feleke was also detained for several days in October, before being released with a caution.
Ethiopia ranked fourth on the CPJ’s list of the 10 most censored countries in 2014, and is the third-worst jailer of journalists in Africa, according to the group’s “prison census”.

At least 73 people were killed and 110 others injured Thursday when a truck carrying petrol blew up in western Mozambique near Malawi, the government said in a statement.
“The incident occurred when citizens tried to take petrol from a truck” in the village of Caphiridzange in Tete province, the statement said.
“Because of the heat, the truck burst into flames, leading to the deaths of 43 people and causing burns in 110 others, according to investigators’ initial findings,” it added.
“Ambulances and medical personnel were deployed to the scene in order to assist the victims. The injured were evacuated to Tete hospital” around 90 kilometres (55 miles) away, it said.
Authorities were probing whether the truck was selling petrol when it exploded, or whether it had been ambushed by residents, information ministry director Joao Manasses told AFP.
A local journalist told AFP the truck had crashed on Wednesday and exploded on Thursday afternoon, as scores of people tried to siphon off fuel.
The government aims to send three ministers to the scene on Friday to monitor the rescuers’ work.
Mozambique is one of the world’s poorest nations, according to the International Monetary Fund, and since its civil war ended in 1992 its population has suffered the consequences of a terrible economic crisis.
The government recently increased the price of fuel, after the value of the local currency — named metical — sunk against the dollar.

40-Year Old Man In Lagos Caught Having Sex With A Two-Year Old Girl (Full Story)

 girl

A 40-year-old painter, Yisa Aweda, was Thursday caught having sexual intercourse with a two-year-old girl child.
The Coordinator, Lagos State Domestic Violence Response Team, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, in a statement on Thursday, said that the incident happened at Aweda’s residence in Orile Area of Lagos
She said that the crime was initially reported at Orile Police Station.
The statement said that the father of the victim stabbed the rapist with a broken bottle when he caught him in the act.
She said,
“On Nov. 16, the victim’s mother found Yisa Aweda having sexual intercourse with her daughter in her living room and immediately shouted for help.
“This attracted other neighbours and her husband who came in and in anger took a broken bottle to cause serious injury on the perpetrator.
“The matter was immediately reported to Orile Police station, while the perpetrator was taken to the hospital for medical attention.
“The father of the girl was also arrested and detained.
“On November 14, Mirabel Centre carried out a test on the victim, which confirmed a penetration but the result has been sent to the Police Station for proper prosecution.
“The matter was reported to the office of DSVRT on Nov.15. We visited the Police station to know the steps taken by the Police and we also visited the perpetrator in the hospital.”
Adeniyi said the case would be filed to court, considering the evidence available, adding that the Office of the Public Defender had been briefed on the matter.
She said,
“In view of this fact, the rights of the child need to be adequately safeguarded and the father of the victim will be legally represented.”
Adeniyi said the perpetrator, a relation of the victim by marriage, had been pleading with the family that the matter should be settled out of court.
She said,
“Today, the family members came to appeal that the matter be settled out of court. DSVRT has been informed about the case and the state would ensure diligent prosecution.
“We hope the suspect recovers quickly to stand trial in the court for the offence he was alleged to have committed and we urge the public to desist from such act.”
Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has urged the Lagos State Task Force Unit to track down offenders of domestic violence and rape cases to serve as deterrent to others.
