The Jigawa State Police Command on Tuesday
arrested a 30-year-old man, Muhammad Adamu,
who allegedly stabbed his father to death in
Mairakumi village in Malammadori Local
Government Area, LGA, of the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, ASP Abu
Jinjiri, who spoke on the incident, assured
newsmen that the command would investigate the
case.
The suspect, who is said to be a psychiatric
patient, stabbed his 60-year-old father, Malam
Adamu, while working on his farm after he was
reportedly infuriated by the reluctance of the
deceased to give him food.
The suspect swiftly attacked his father with a knife
and inflicted fatal injury on him. His father died
from the wounds he sustained from the attack.
Meanwhile, we gathered that the villagers had
earlier rescued the deceased’s wife from her son
when he made attempt on her life by attacking her
with an axe. The villagers had reported the case to
the police, who arrested the suspect. It was after
his release that he attacked his father, leaving him
dead.
A 63-year-old man, Korede Odubela, has
been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly killing his
16-year-old stepdaughter, Amudat Oshimodi, for ritual purposes.
The suspect was said to have connived
with another accomplice, Lekan Lawal, to commit the crime at Imosan
village, in the Odogbolu Local Government Area of the state.
The two suspects were among the 12
suspects paraded at the command headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta, on
Tuesday by the state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, for various
offences, including armed robbery, burglary and stealing.
Iliyasu said Odubela, who was the leader
of the gang, connived with Lawal to strangle Oshimodi, after which they
sold her head and hands to ritual killers.
The police commissioner said the men of
the Special Anti-Robbery Squad received information about their
activities and swooped on them on Monday, November 7, 2016.
Odubela said he connived with Lawal to
kill his stepdaughter because the 16-year-old girl was always stealing
her mother’s money.
He said, “The mother said we should kill
her as a sacrifice for other children she had. She (Oshimodi) normally
slept by the outside door. On that day, around 12 midnight, I invited
Lekan Lawal, and he held the girl by the neck and strangled her while I
held her legs.”
Odubela said he sold Amudat’s head to his son, Seun, a herbalist who paid him N3,000, as part payment.
However, Odubela’s wife, Fausat, denied asking her husband to kill her daughter.
Iliyasu said the case was still under
investigation, while the corpse of Amudat had been deposited at the
morgue of the Ijebu Ode General Hospital.
The command also paraded suspected
robbers –Tochukwu Njikonye, Abdulahi Abdulamid and Obinna Mbam – who
were said to have been arrested on Monday, October 3, 2016, in the
Ogbere area of the state. The police said they were arrested while
robbing motorists of their valuables.
Iliyasu said the suspects were armed
with two pump-action guns and one locally-made pistol, adding that they
usually blocked the road with either truck or wood to “perpetrate their
nefarious activity.”
Six other suspects were equally paraded
for burglary and stealing. The suspects were said to have burgled the
computer laboratory of the Egba-Obafemi Community Grammar School, in the
Obafemi-Owode Local government Area and carted away 95 tablets
(computers) and their chargers.
Iliyasu said the school principal, Mrs.
Ajiboye Olaide, reported the matter at the Owode-Egba Police Station on
Wedneday, November 9, 2016, and the Divisional Police Officer and his
men swung into action.
He said two suspects were arrested in
the bushes around the school, which led to the arrest of the gang
leader, Oluwagbotemi Ojo.
Iliyasu said the alleged receiver of the
stolen computers, Sunday Olufemi, was also arrested in Ibadan, Oyo
State, while all the computers were recovered.
Ojo, however, said the school’s security guard, Saheed Adamu, gave him information on how to burgle the computer laboratory.
The CP also disclosed that his men
received information that some armed robbers used a house in Egbe
village in Ijebu Ode as their hideout, adding that one Gbenga Olowolafe
was arrested with one pump-action gun and one double-barrelled gun.
The suspect, however, said he was the coordinator of the Oo’dua Peoples Congress in the Egbe area.
President Muhammadu Buhari says Nigeria will be one of the world’s best examples in emission reduction.
The President made this known on Tuesday
in his statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr.
Femi Adesina, at the 22nd Session of the Conference of Parties to the
United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change taking place in
Marrakech, Morocco.
Buhari, in the statement, outlined the
Federal Government’s plan toward aligning with the global objectives on
climate change and ensuring inclusive growth and environmental
sustainability.
The president declared his
administration’s resolve to ensure that policies put in place to address
climate change would make the country emerge as one of the world’s best
examples of how reducing emissions could benefit the environment and
the economy.
He said, “In Nigeria, we are launching a
strategic plan for the implementation of our Intended Nationally
Determined Contributions.
“We have equally embraced the issuance
of green bonds as innovative means and alternative way of raising
climate finance both locally and internationally.
“We cannot afford to wait until 2020. We
are already making far reaching changes in all sectors of our economy,
including through substantially increasing the use of climate smart
agriculture and diversification of our energy mix through renewable and
efficient gas power.’’
He said that the changes also included
creating more efficient, cleaner and lower-carbon oil and gas sector,
especially through a gas to energy programme and initiating the
implementation of clean-up of the Ogoni-Land in the Niger-Delta region.
The President stated that Nigeria
planned to reduce emissions by 20 per cent by the year 2030, with the
intention of raising the target to 45 per cent, with the support of the
international community.
He said, “We have reflected our
determination for green growth in my country’s ambitious Intended
Nationally Determined Contribution.
“We have also announced plans to reduce
emissions by 20 per cent by the year 2030, with the intention of raising
this target to 45 per cent, with the support of the international
community.
“This is one of Africa’s most ambitious
Intended Nationally Determined Contributions – covering all emissions
from all parts of the economy.”
Buhari noted that Nigeria has no choice but to key into the global action on climate change.
He said, “In Nigeria for instance, the impact is being felt by the more
than 2.1 million people displaced by devastating floods that the country
has continued to suffer since 2012.
“If not addressed by 2050, the human and financial cost would be colossal.
“For us in Nigeria, the larger dimension of the challenge goes beyond emission rights. Survival rights are also at stake.”
The President told the gathering of the agreement at the 71st session of
the UN General Assembly that climate threats and security threats go
hand in hand and called for concerted efforts on them.
He said, “The Lake Chad Basin for
example, has shrunk to a mere 10 per cent of its original size, and this
has seriously affected the livelihood of over five million people and
contributed to the growth of insecurity in the region, including the
emergence of Boko Haram as a terrorist group.
“Hence the urgent need to resuscitate
Lake Chad. In this regard, I seize this opportunity to express gratitude
and appreciation to those who have responded to our call and to
encourage other well-meaning partners to join in our efforts to revive
the Lake Chad Basin.”
He expressed the readiness of Nigeria to join hands for the change that the whole world was working toward.
He said, “We, therefore, stand ready to
engage in meaningful partnerships to tackle the menace, and call on our
neighbours and developing partners to fulfil their financial obligations
in support of efforts to mitigate the negative impacts of climate
change.”
He also called on world leaders to
“recommit ourselves to the achievement of the goals outlined in the
Paris Agreement that we collectively signed in 2015 for the benefit of
this and future generations.”
President Buhari disclosed that Nigeria
had submitted its instrument of ratification for the new global agenda
on climate change.
“We urge others to do the same in order to make the world a safe place.”
The police in Lagos State have launched a manhunt for two neighbours, identified only as Muhammed and Samuel, who stabbed a man to death during a quarrel in the Somolu area of the state.
Our correspondent learnt that the victim, identified as Christian Ugbaka, was stabbed in the chest while trying to settle a fight between Muhammed and Samuel, who lived on Babylone Street splensizygathered that 25-year-old Ugbaka, who had visited a friend in the house at about 10pm last Tuesday, met Muhammed and Samuel arguing over Muhammed’s girlfriend, identified simply as Sahadatu.
He reportedly attempted to settle the fight, but was killed during the altercation. The suspects subsequently fled the area. It was learnt that the matter was reported at the Pedro Police Division, while the operatives took Ugbaka’s corpse to a morgue.
A police source told our correspondent that it was believed that Muhammed owned the dagger used to stab the victim to death.
He said, “It was the girlfriend, Sahadatu, who came to the police station to report that her lover, Muhammed, had stabbed a peacemaker to death.
“On that evening, the occupants were sitting together in front of the house. Sahadatu’s younger sister, Aishat, was also with them. Samuel was said to have had an argument with Sahadatu, during which Samuel slapped Aishat and Sahadatu.
“Mohammed, the boyfriend, was angry and queried Samuel for harassing his girlfriend and her younger sister. It resulted in a scuffle. It was the victim, Ugbaka, who came in at the moment and tried to separate the two men.
“But suddenly, one of the men brought out a dagger and mistakenly stabbed Ugbaka in the chest. We believed that Muhammed inflicted the injuries because the dagger belonged to him.”
PUNCH Metrolearnt that Ugbaka was rushed to a private hospital in the area, where he was confirmed dead by a doctor.
A resident of the area, who did not want his name in print, said Muhammed and Samuel fled the house since the day of the incident.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, said the case had been transferred to the State Department of Criminal Intelligence and Investigation.
She said, “The man’s corpse was deposited at the morgue of the Lagos Mainland Hospital, Yaba, for autopsy. The case had been transferred to the Homicide Section of the SCIID for further investigation.”
In another development, the police are on the trail of two suspected cult members, who shot dead a 22-year-old, Samuel John, in the Ikotun area of the state.
PUNCH Metrolearnt that John, at about 4pm on that Tuesday, was hit by bullets from the cult members who were shooting indiscriminately on Governor’s Road.
Our correspondent was told that the gunmen, who came on a motorcycle, shot John in the neck.
A witness, who gave his name only as Cornelius, said the victim was rushed to the General Hospital, Igando, where he died.
A police source told our correspondent that efforts were on to arrest the fleeing suspects.
The Lagos State Police spokesperson, Badmos, confirmed the incident, adding that investigation was ongoing.
